Hundreds of protesters descended on an ancient Hindu hill temple in India on Wednesday, seeking to thwart women who, until recently, had been banned from entering the popular pilgrimage site.
The crowd fought street battles with police, damaged police and television vehicles, and ultimately bullied women into turning back from the Sabarimala temple in the southern state of Kerala, according to local news reports.
The mob also verbally and physically assaulted several female Indian journalists who were covering the protest ― some of whom say police didn’t do enough to protect them.
n September, India’s Supreme Court lifted the temple’s centuries-old ban on women between the ages of 10 and 50, who were barred because they could potentially be on their periods
The News Minute, an Indian digital newspaper, said reporter Saritha Balan was physically attacked while embedded with a group of devotees traveling to Sabarimala on a bus. A mob of around 20 men reportedly forced Balan to exit the bus before kicking her, taking her photograph and calling her “derogatory names,” the news site said.

Hundreds of protesters? Sounds like a bunch of radicals, there are over a billion people in India and 80% of them are Hindu.

At least you got that right.
There are many things I don't understand as well, but that doesn't mean others don't deserve the freedom to pursue their own happiness, fulfillment and interests. If we expect our own freedom to be respected then we also owe it to others to provide the same respect.

radicals yes but just the fact that there was a centuries old ban on women age 10-50 cause they might be on their periods.
# is backwards man
at least religion sucks everywhere.
just like when people like to dog Islam when something happens. they go to that "but its the religion of piece" angle.
all the different religions that preach or teach love and tolerance all have their crazy ways. they preach love and tolerance... sure but there is a lot of hate and intolerance with it too.

What do you mean you don't get it?
Really?
Politics is violent, schools are violent, streets are violent, homes are violent
When you,say religion is violent are you blaming the ideal?
It's like saying science is violent, science is not violent, science is reporting the facts.
Religion is not violent, religion is a law, guideline or philosophy
The religion is not violent people are violent, all people are violent
Even non religious are violent, Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot
It's a human condition not a religious condition
