oooo, I love me some Cherryh. I stuck with the more sword and magic series like the 'faded sun trilogy', but maybe I should give some of her more technological novels a chance.

As to bureaucracy running the place, maybe we are the bureaucracy...all of us. We set hard coded rules and regulations on this reality that can't be readily changed, so basically everyone lives by the same rules (regardless of pedigree). It does appear that there is more strife throughout the average life compared to peace and the lack of longing. But maybe that is the point. Something different than what we experience in heaven.

There are opportunities here that wouldn't be available in heaven, such as decay and entropy. Maybe that darkness/chaos/decay is what provides us unique and original opportunities. Maybe that is why this reality is so wonderful, it gives us a chance to experience something other than perfection.

I just wonder if we setup this reality as a free for all experience with no repercussions? Or if taking a plunge into this reality has some type of consequences that follow us back to the spiritual realm?

And as to the finish line, maybe that is just a human concept due to our mortality (another thing that makes this reality great). If we are immortal through our spirits, with no decay or entropy in the spiritual plane, there would never be a need for a finish line. It would be more like a continuous game between friends that will never end.

'Hey, I will select the attributes for being gravitationally challenged along with this desire to self destruct'.
'You choose your equal limitations and we will see who has better karmic debt after 2000 lifetimes'.
'Aaaaaannnnndddddddd GO!!!'.

It boggles my mind to think that humanity could possibly go back millions of years through multiple advanced civilizations rising and falling. But if reincarnation were the key, it kind of makes sense.

Maybe in the case of the OP, it isn't so much about reading the future (which I would like to think would be impossible) but a relaxing of certain of the amnesia blocks so intuition is much stronger. Say the OP is a very old soul that loves this material realm. Through their selection of attributes, they are able to 'hear the echos' of past lives and are better able to predict future paths.

Like he saw his wife years in the past and knew by his perception of the soul that they were going to be together. Knowing this in his subconscious until he wanted to bring it into the conscious realm.

I have a feeling that maybe the future does impact the past, but I haven't put any of the pieces together yet into a fanciful fictional story.

Ahh, but they say we are heading into a new age. A new branch of the sub-race of the root-race that will herald us into something 'different'.

I believe there is something beyond the physical. There is something that our current science will never be able to detect. Maybe that was the great message of 'faith'. It is unseen, untouchable and unmeasurable, but it is there much to the dismay of the materialists.

The materialists want to deny the existence of the spiritual, because many of them would need to rewrite their entire foundation on which the merely survive through this reality. They are just trying to keep their heads above water after treading in the middle of the ocean for 72 hours straight. You can see the fear in their eyes when the subject of death comes up. For if they felt or maybe even acknowledged the spirit, they would look down beneath the waves and realize the bottom is only 4 feet down. They can merely stand up and stop struggling so hard.

But I think I can feel other people's emotions, if they are strong. I can experience anxiety when I have no reason to, but simply being next to someone that is forming the hated figure of dread. The easiest for me to experience is sexual desire or hate. I think I can also feel the power of a person's soul, but I have no idea what that means. There have been some individuals where their level of hate has been astronomical, like a crushing weight on my chest that makes it hard to breathe. Those I take as wonderful challenges to simply sit there and meditate with no reaction. The other extreme is attraction which is much better. You can immediately lock eyes with the sender and know. The best part is being male where the female is usually reluctant to approach, very little danger there.

I have no abilities like the OP. I have never contacted or remember spiritual entities. I think it may be fun for a while, but I don't know if it would be a long lasting blessing.

I agree with everything you wrote.

And these days? The veil between this world, dimension....is becoming thinner...and more and more people are becoming "aware".

Thanks, and best to you...

I've enjoyed the Sunfall book so much I wrote an email to Cherryh last year to thank her for writing it. She didn't reply or send any free editions lol.

I like to think there would be no repercussions in an afterlife. We already know how gene markers dictate a lot of how we make decisions. Symmetrical faces and physical beauty have been shown to improve a person's life experiences too. An ugly person with mental illness and a genetic propensity to crystal meth shouldn't really be held accountable for their conduct in this life. Likewise someone beautiful and intelligent shouldn't have doors opening for them in the hereafter when they might have had fewer obstacles in this life. Intent is also a byproduct of thought which, again, is at least reliant on how well formed the brain is.

'Hey, I will select the attributes for being gravitationally challenged along with this desire to self destruct'. 'You choose your equal limitations and we will see who has better karmic debt after 2000 lifetimes'. 'Aaaaaannnnndddddddd GO!!!'.

This could be it. We might don a character or even several and play the Game of Life. Just maybe we arrive down here with our character and moral compasses and get tested? Like a pen test of values.

What do you believe in and do you think you're on the right road?

Question? What does purple/violet, red and gold hold in significance for you, if at all?

It has a significance in a part of my wife's business. These are the colours I focus on when designing products for her. I think they go well together and stand out.

I also attribute these colours to levels of aura, gold being the pinnacle and the others different levels of health/wellbeing.

I have had similar thoughts to your own re karma/reincarnation but I cant quite figure it out. Maybe our minds are not capable of understanding outwith our reality.

Although you say you don't have abilities, it sounds like you do. Picking up emotion etc is part of an ability. You don't even need to interact with anyone, just observe and let the feelings/thoughts flow.

Meditation is a strong enhancer. The thoughts flow freely and anything can happen.

Also, your thoughts on reading the future. I do agree and sometimes my mind cannot reconcile the fact that so many things I have seen have come to pass. How is it possible?

One theory I have is the points in time I pick up are charged with emotion that leaves vibrations so strong they can pass through time, like echoes from the future.

Imagine being so much in debt you cant see a way out, ever. Then your dad hands you the money to pay it all off.

Imagine falling out with your lifelong best friend before their wedding over something stupid.

Imagine meeting someone and falling in love, knowing she's the one.

Imagine changing jobs after 15 years of working in the same place every day, with a large pay increase and travelling the country which you've never managed to do before.

Imagine meeting an old friend you havn't seen for years.

All these incidents would be emotional, and that's the pattern I see.

If anyone else has a better explanation, please share.

Well then I guess what I stated and saw had a positive truth to it. I try not to nomore than state things as seen, as it's not for me to make sense of it. Great. Thanks....

Ha, my only piece of fan mail I have sent out to an author was to Elaine Cunningham after I read ElfShadow (Forgotten Realms). That book was beautiful. She actually replied as well, probably because it was the start of her publishing.

I tend to think this reality is an amusement park with so many hidden things that 1000's of lifetimes may only scratch the surface. I do believe there are some repercussions for our actions while we are here and if one observes this reality closely, the rules become apparent. Basically, you receive what you dish out. If your intentions are bad, life will have its way with you and won't even use lube. I don't know if I am on the right path or not, but it is certainly one of my choosing that I am fully aware of and fully accept. I try to treat others with kindness and respect. I think the one major transgression in this reality is interfering with another person's free will, especially if they are respecting the free will of the people they come into contact with.

I don't put too much faith in genetic determination. I believe free will and soul are the major instigators of intention and actions.

For me, the physically ugly that is only skin deep (not the emotional ugliness or health issues) is a wonderful gift of this reality. It teaches a person that their true worth is defined by themselves and no one else. If they stop caring what others think of them, they are able to live a life free of the horrible issues that face the beautiful and pretty.

I wouldn't want the mental structure that the beautiful develop, it would make life way too hard and possibly wouldn't be wonderful anymore. Unless they had very wise parents that instilled wholesome values in them, their chances of becoming warped creatures is very high. Imagine getting all of that emotional/spiritual energy from others simply for standing there.

It's funny, we all live in the same world, but it isn't the same world we experience. I mentioned to someone yesterday about a friend who believes in flat Earth. He says, "You live on a round Earth and I live on a flat Earth." If that's how he experiences his life, it's no business of ours to argue otherwise and he doesn't go on about it being flat. Respect each other's worlds is good enough for me.

Your own world view seems a fair and upbeat one. Although I am fairly sold on the role of genes, it's no deal breaker if someone is less convinced. The Mind-Body debate is interesting too.

I think you might appreciate this old gif of a neologism. It's cool and is the tip of the iceberg for how I view the world.

Damn, some people would say that is frightening and makes our lives more separated, I think that it is beautiful. It actually brought a tear to my eye. We are all connected and distant at the same time. We can choose to be left alone or we can immerse ourselves in the lives of others. There are so many choices out there, so many different paths. So many different people and for the first time in history, we can view their lives through technology. There are so many stories of people that have major physical limitations but live their life with their heads held high, absorbing everything with a astonishing light in their eyes. A thirst that is born out of love instead of emptiness.

That to me is true beauty.

I am still struggling with the gene determination / nature vs nurture / soul. I would like to think there is some core to us that make us who we are. Something immortal and even beyond time. But there is probably a balance out there. Some massive scale between our soul and our environment which would include our body/genes. To deny our surroundings have an impact would be dishonest, I just don't think it is much past 50/50.
