I heard it was closed for lack of funding. I have a friend up there in Timberon who's going to ask around.
Ah, yes. I know when places around here close for lack of funding, the FBI always shows up and shuts down the post office and evacuates everybody...

Heres the video I referenced earlier folks, this is the one where the person apparently went through the barrier and found the place abandoned.
I did not see the original video, apparently it had been taken down due some copyright type thing the first time around.

ETA here is another video from the same person, this time they are walking near the observatory, the video quality is noticeably poor compared to the other video. m.imgur.com...

I don't think those are planets. Not at the same exact size- and well- there's only ONE planet that could fit the size requirement, that'd be Venus. Mercury is so close, it'd be a tiny blob.
Another thing to ponder as well... if those are planets- where's the atmosphere that would catch the light of the sun and diffuse it? Venus again would be a blur, not a solid black disk.
*ponders a second* Why are there 2 in focus black disks, and nothing is out of focus at all? ????
It is the moon.
Going in 2 diff directions? Is it drunk?
It also paused the first wander by- or it looked like it did on the video.
Edit note: I'm sneezing my head off- so errors shall be creeping in...
You know this is all going down on a very significant date for Muslim terrorists.
It's possible they found something regarding a planned dirty bomb or other agent in the area, with a sympathizer working in the lab. Could be that the area, or the lab was the gathering point for the launch of the attack, and that the attack was to take place against the air base.
The feds got wind of it.
It makes sense to why they were evacuating everybody and everything, and shutting down the observatory.
It makes sense that the feds are putting up antenna with instruments that can detect those things, and also possible communications signals between members of a terrorist cell that are using something like hand radios instead of cell phones. That would also make sense as to the electronic warfare aircraft in the sky, as they can cover more area.
Also would make sense to have as many aircraft on "exercise" from the base as possible, if they think this thing can do enough damage to the air base, I would suppose due to contamination.
It also makes sense for the feds to be hush hush about it.
If there are holes in my theory, I'm sure one of you guys can point them out. I'm just guessing here, but a serious guess this time.
Uh oh. The link on the SOHO page for where you can get current solar images goes here umbra.nascom.nasa.gov... which says: "Note: SOLIS images SOLIS instrumentation is being moved and we do not expect current images again before early September." Strange times indeed

Just my 2 cents...You don't suddenly evacuate a town, with FBI agents and a tactical Blackhawk helicopter, if this was due to the expansion of Holloman AFB, which is @20 miles west of Sunspot, NM. It can't be due to an upcoming catastrophic sun flare, because other observatories, including amateur astronomers around the world, would be putting that warning up on the internet by now. It can't be an environmental hazard, because no one saw emergency response contractors from the EPA or anyone, for that matter, wearing hazmat suits. If it was the response due to a terrorist threat, why turn away law enforcement, including the involvement of State Troopers and ICE agents? This event, IMO, is a case involving National Security and the recovery of classified materials. What on? Who knows, but the cause for this evacuation will eventually be covered up with a bogus explanation from federal authorities.

Just finished speaking to another person who is close to the area and they said people there are less speculative that its ET related. They said that the local population are assuming it's some kind of manhunt for a fugitive or some kind of leak in the holding tank for the mercury..possibly someone even trying to steal the mercury ?
In any case people near the area seem to be keeping a grounded approach to the whole thing, which also means nothing spectacular has happened otherwise to make them feel any different. At least not for this person I'm regards to the local rumours going around.

Some new info about flights around the area..its been posted that it seems as though most flights are avoiding the area, although there is no flight restriction in effect. Could be a coincidence. Also there was a person who apparently went beyond the barrier and did not see anyone there at the observatory.
I cant say wether that second part is true yet, the person said they are going to upload photos they took while there so let's be patient at the very least.
