First I think your standard is incorrect; I doubt simon and shucter are as thorough as you imply

Mattis has denied.
Unless Woodward releases tapes, that's the end of it, for all but those desperately hanging on to anything to support their narrative, believing a guy trying to sell a book as opposed to a well respected General.
Easy for Woodward to prove now if he says he has tapes...

Is this your opinion or something you know?
You don't think a publisher has lawyers on staff to protect their interests?
Do you really doubt that given today's atmosphere of litigation?

What reason would Woodward have to lie? He's 75 and semi-retired. His legacy and reputation is set as, arguably, the most famous and respected journalist in American history. And thanks to All the President's Men he probably has enough money.
So why would he risk losing all that by lying?

It's more likely he feels he must remain to keep the mad man in check.

They didn’t take legal action against wolffs book either, and we know it was lieS
Prove it. Woodward's book actually puts some of Wolf's anecdotes in context.

Only if you ignore the fact that he has a history of speaking the truth even when it had a negative impact on his career.
This is not about protecting a career, it is about preventing a world war.

Obviously you have not read the book. The White House has screamed that it is all lies... but no legal action has been taken. Why is that, do you suppose?
