High school proposes ticketing students for using cell phones

I mean, they can write out the ticket, but...its not really enforceable by law, i dont think.

My kids all have cell phones. They dont really need them because the school gives them chromebooks, unless they need to contact me.

Alcohol and tobacco are banned from schools just fine even if they do show up from time to time. It makes no sense to abandon proper learning standards just because some kids will be a rebel. So it is no difficulty at all to ban cell phone usage in classrooms. If anything, all this technology is actually making kids dumber.

Your not smart because you can web search an answer to any question asked in seconds. In fact anybody who's first instinct is to turn to a web search for an answer to a question without first firing up your internal CPU (brain) is an idiot. I have known the answer to why the sky is blue since I was in like the third grade. Most people will just start typing before trying to think if they even remember studying it years prior.

Its the balance of Nitrogen in the atmosphere in relation to the oxygen and Argon. But in all honestly, I forgot specifically why the nitrogen is important. I believe it may be related the way the colors of light scatter when hitting it. Either way, I could have simply have chosen to web search the answer before I even started typing and pretend to be some smart ass snob, but it is always best to defer to your own brain first, and supplement the missing facts with a web search after. Kind of like those textbooks that used to have all the answers in the back (Algebra). Your only supposed to use them to check your work.

Anyways, thousands of years of children being educated in schools, somehow they did not all die spontaneously in unison from a lack of a personal tracking device with internet search access at their fingertips for more than five seconds.

If you insist on having cell phones in classrooms, you are encouraging a generation of weaker children who will become easily victimized and so ignorant they would not be able to tell you their own address or the closest cross street from their house if you find them lost ten blocks away. "my mommy says if I push this button it will take me home, but my battery died and now I cry waiting for a predator to consume me!"

You know what, whatever. Fill the world with prey, my house is in order. Dinner is everywhere I see.

Later on with the button ones, you could trick them into accepting DTMF tones via the microphone using a DTMF tone generator.

On some public telephone boxes devices in the 80s/90s you had to hold a magnet to trick the hall sensor inside the speaker shell and use a toothpick to hold down the button that it rests on. Pick up the corded handset slowly release it until you heard a knack coming from the speaker. Then you would tape down the button.

After that you had to call a special number via the buttons (without paying anything, normally you could not dial that number without paying first), wait for the beep and use the DTMF tone generator to "dial" the number -any number-. Depending on the "service" you wanted to use you either phoned someone to prank them....

...or slam the handset into youir acoustic couplers reception, wait for the carrier signal lock and off you went with 300 Baud for free...

This worked between two telephone boxes, too.

Yes I did see teachers drink with their students. This is not something that I heard secondhand, this is something I witnessed many times with my own eyes.

Yet, you dismiss my example about the kid that got his stomach pumped?

Do you realize how easy it is to manipulate people who rely on facts they have to constantly look up because they never acquired those facts for themselves?

So let's say you never were taught properly what the three rights in the first Amendment were/are. So you look it up every single time someone asks you. If enough people are like that, then what they know is controlled by those who control what they see on the screen.

It's 1984 and the MInistry of Truth. What happens when that fact suddenly changes to have a different text? Would enough people have that knowledge acquired themselves to know or make a difference or would the good little "lookup" sheep be the critical mass that matters?

Turn the damn things off, leave 'em off while in class. But tickets? Seriously?

It's not cellphones that should be banned. It's schools that should be banned. Majority of things taught in schools is useless. Most of it can be and is searched online, forgotten when people grow up. Scholalry system should be redone from the ground up. At least here where I live.

Yep. I actually, after a short discussion involving the uses of trig with Phage a few days ago, tried my high school trig knowledge just to see how horrible I'd be. I have to agree. Internet "facts" are only facts until someone changes them. Be it for a valid reason such as new information came out, or to for a less than valid reason, to promote some form of agenda, and control opinion.

Ketsu, I read your entire post and I hope you will read mine.

I totally agree with you that you must master things in your head. A cell phone is simply a vehicle to help you do that, just as a book, or tv, or the internet. I'm not saying teachers should allow students to mindlessly look up everything. No that would be silly. If you read the one link I provided a teacher uses cell phones much in the same way as a computer. To enhance learning. He sits students in circle and walks around. He says that the cell phones are actually being used for learning and they are not a distraction but an enhancement.

I'm also surprised that people think that cell phones are used simply for looking things up. There are learning games, there are examples of how to do math problems. There are videos that help enhance learning. Back in the day teachers used to roll out a big old tv and the students would watch. Wouldn't it be a lot more convenient to watch it on your phone at a volume that suits . I listed few examples but there are so much more that don't involve just believing random "knowledge". If you just want to focus on that. Just for a moment, do you believe it is possible for this generation to perhaps acquire more knowledge than ever before. Imagine what kind of change that could produce. I'll tell you, just look at the speed information can be shared. Too bad that wasn't around during plagues, war, and weather incidents of the past.

Your question about what happens when facts change. Well my friend, that has been happening with books this whole time.

I'm old enough to remember when people used to say computers should absolutely NOT be in schools. What they said back then was that kids would only play games on them. It is the exact same excuse. We know that students now MUST have computer knowledge.

Regarding the other person's post, to be honest, that post was the first I ever grammar Nazi'd in my life, as you put it. They set themselves up so bad, it was too hard to resist! I swear I only did it because of the content of that individual post!

I agree with the idea of them not being allowed during school time unelss the teacher wants them to be used, but I dont like the idea of banning them or them being left in lockers. Maybe its just because I like to be overprepared but incase of emergency (as we've seen all too many times being needed lately) I think its very important for them to be available and on the person.
