Good thread. When a culture swings too far in one direction, there's going to be problems. To be honest I don't think those clothes are a problem, but lowered participation in sports is a big problem, and not just when it comes to hormone levels.

And I'd bring up lowered birth-rates as another big cause, combined with lower infant mortality. It's become way more common for couples to have only one child, and that means that the single child is extremely valuable. Obviously there's nothing wrong with that; kids are the most important thing, the future. But I think it makes many parents too anxious and cautious, both mothers and fathers I imagine. They over-protect their children and deprive them of chances to become more independent and just plain stronger human beings. I could see this tying in with testosterone levels.

Yeah. To be fair, this is kind of what progressives or post-modernists do when they critically analyze culture. But there's so much bias and lack of nuance that they end up taking one step forward and one back.

EDIT: Well it might only be plastics and obesity too, who knows. But I think it's pretty plausible that cultural behavior could affect hormones too, and not just the other way around.

That's a very elegant idea, sounds true to me. But what do you mean in this case? If a culture becomes too feminine, it turns masculine, and vice versa? Because of a counter-reaction? Or because everything is the same, just different polarities?

Yeah, well I agree with some of it, but I see what you mean. These issues are really complicated and they haven't figured it out all the way. Any movement stagnates eventually and becomes obsolete.

I can't say much about testosterone levels but I guess you weren't paying attention to the clothing line for men in the 1700's or earlier amirite?

Not to mention birth control and other hormones that contaminated the water supply.
