I assume you're referring to the yellow mics. They're just wireless mics, and there was probably a transceiver nearby.
I'm sure it was a pretty controlled environment though, most of them are. You can normally spot them coming together.
And yes, they are very rehearsed. It's not like it's a spontaneous thing. The performers just try to make it look that way.
It's usually fun for most of the people who see one and are not expecting it.
I've seen a couple of them, both at our airport. I knew they were going to happen in advance (it was put on by the airport during the Christmas
holiday) and they had sent notices out, but the traveling public had no idea. Mostly just Christmas music kind of stuff, but people seemed to have
fun with it.
Hey, I'm all for it if it makes people smile and have a few minutes of fun enjoying the moment!
ETA - I saw another one which was positively embarrassing to watch once too. It was some interpretive dance thing...with no music (except in their
earbuds). They called it "art". Looked like a bunch of people hopping around having seizures to me. I had to look away, it was pretty
awful...kinda' like chewing on tinfoil.
Couldn't really eat my lunch after that either; every time I'd take a bite of my Whopper I'd start snickering, snorting and cracking up hysterically
just thinking about it. People were looking at me like I was nuts.
