Navy signals for help to recruit gay sailors

Navy signals for help to recruit gay sailors
Nicholas Hellen, Social Affairs Editor

THE Royal Navy has turned to Stonewall, the gay lobby group, for advice on how to recruit and retain homosexual sailors.
Senior officers want to encourage more gay and lesbian sailors, estimated at 2,100, to “come out”, paving the way for the first openly gay admiral.

The partnership, to be announced tomorrow, will provide the template for a wider change in the culture of the armed forces. Ben Summerskill, chief executive of Stonewall, said: “We hope that the RAF and the army will be following shortly.”

Vice-Admiral Sir James Burnell-Nugent, Second Sea Lord, said he looked forward to working with Stonewall, whose founders include Sir Ian McKellen, the actor. The admiral said it would help a culture in which “all our people are valued for themselves and are thus able to give 100% to their job”.

In a symbolic move, the navy will place advertisements in the Pink Paper, the first time it has sought recruits through the gay press.

Commodore Paul Docherty, for the navy, said: “(The advertisements) will show those who are gay and are uncomfortable about the environment (here) that our position on diversity is not just empty talk.”

Ok now for some added quotes and reactions I have found to this story

The British Navy's New Slogan: "Be all that you can be--on your knees in a toilet stall!"

"...and when I say there isn't any cannibalism in the Navy, I mean there is a certain amount."

Chapter Two: 'I Am Nailed To The Hull'.

This is the result of the world succumbing to the mental disease called "Liberalism."

"thay thailor" wink wink....

An attempt to cut down on shipboard pregnancy?

Gives a whole new meaning to referring to British Naval Officer as a Gay Blade

I'd think that and the flamer's fantasies of being one of The Village People would have them lining up to get in.

Apparently fighting and winning wars are not of primary importance to the Royal Navy, at one time the premiere fighting force in the world.

If you thought the Navy uniforms looked 'spiffy' now; just wait until the Navy get's the full 'make-over'. Battleship Grey will be out; replaced with Seafoam greens and lilac blues. One can only guess how the subs will be re-designed.

How do they spell sucksess?

"The cabin boy, the cabin boy, the naughty little nipper, shoved broken glass ..." from the ballad of Barnacle Bill the sailor.

Good times aboard The HMS Raging Queen

Well marg I will not say much except for you to ask your husband his opinion on the subject ok? You yourself have not served and therefore look at it differently, combat is one thing but this is a problem that is not needed in the service, just as women in combat are a distraction for the males , openly gay ones are even worse.........

My husband served 22 years he knew about gays and he work with them, he made jokes and such specially when the "don't tell" came around, but as any other thing, in combat is all about helping each other and taking care of the fellow soldier, that is a women or men or gay or lesbian it does not matter.

Women are in the military right now, and they do a good job, and I find funny that more problems are coming from the "Macho" type than the women or "other type"

My friend dean serves on a warship in the uk, and whenever he comes to see me he tells me all the stuff he's been up to, i asked him whether theres any gay people on his ship, and he replies 'not that im aware of' and i beleave him, but he told me on his ship theres a small bar that sells alcohol and now and then when someone shouts out 'NAKED BAR!!' everyone one in the bar has to take off all their clothes and sit about naked while drinking and if you dont strip your not allowed in the bar! im sure id be up for it... but only if females were also engaging in such activity, but that does sound 'a bit gay' dont ya think?

That is extremely ignorant. There would be tons of straight males in the world who would dare not step outside their house without their brand name clothes on and hair immaculate. And it's possible that some of those are in the navy.

At least you have a sense of humor about it.

A tiny moment of high-profile publicity with a gay rights group expressing a desire to change hardly 'proves' how things are 'on the ground' does it?

Anyhoo who's kidding who here, what was it Churchill said - long ago - scoffing in reply to some dumb comment about the Royal Navys' supposed traditions?
'Rum sodomy and the lash' he said, wasn't it?

Gay men in the mainly male environment of the armed forces......geee who'd a thunk it.

This is an ignorant question on my part but the way you make it sound is as if it was already commonplace and that most of the Royal Navy engage in these acts.

I would hope I have misread your intentions and I damn sure hope they are wrong ...

- Oh come on ed, pack it in. "Commonplace"? Who said that?

Gay people in the military has been a recurrent theme ever since there was a military anywhere.
....to the point of extreme where there are several recorded instances of the ancient 'powers' who used to have whole massed divisions of gay men to 'work over ' the defeated survivors of their battles and ensure their sufficient 'de-motivation' and docility in defeat.

and that most of the Royal Navy engage in these acts.

- I've told you a million times, do not exaggerate!

I would hope I have misread your intentions and I damn sure hope they are wrong ...

- I have no reason to believe that there are more gay people in the British military than, for instance, the US.
I would, however, suggest that armed forces generally have a higher proportion of gay men that the 'background societal level' because of the attractions of the macho all-male environment etc.

That is a world away from saying anything about "commonplace" or "most".

I always knew the UK had the gayest military in the world.
