Lack of Civility

Hi new here first post. I have been looking for a site where you can have candid discussions without the insults, vulgarity and hate currently ravaging other sites. I've deeply saddened by the inability of folks to discuss controversial issues and remain civil to each other. When did it become "hate speech" to disagree? Why is a different point of view so personally threatening? When did it become acceptable to label everyone who doesn't agree with you a hater, bigot etc? When did insults become the preferred counter for facts and statistics? When did it become acceptable to physically assault others simply for holding another point of view? Is the world really changing that much or is that perception the media is projecting?
