There is the world`s strongest Maelstrom (Saltstraumen) in Bodø Norway that Edgar Allen Poe wrote about.
Hard to be sure what Poe had in mind at the time "A Descent into the Maelström" was published, much has never been fully disclosed.
IMHO Poe must have recently viewed something like Botticelli’s Inferno which is a visual depiction of Hell.
I'm guessing the Eagle was more likely from Finland (per 'Q' thread).
