I think what many people miss is a lot of people didn't go voluntarily to colonies.

One German dude they made drunk, and he passed out, and when he came to he was informed he's now an enlisted sailor for the Dutch Eastern India Company.

In Portland they literally had traps that swallowed men, and they were sold to the navies.

Just going for a drink luv ... never heard from again.

Such was the 17th century.
Yeah and in Portland (USA) you can still see those traps and devices today.
