More facts, less speculation please.

Posters that source their statements and provide links or documentation, I appreciate you. Those arguing two sides of a fruitless basket, please seek evidence and share it with us.

The bizarre finding, which sends compasses into an uncontrollable spin
Bull#.

According to geologists the molten rock below the Mount Kilauea caldera contains vast amounts of iron and is effectively a sea of floating magnets.
More bull#. See: Curie point.

seems like we are experiencing a pole shift in culture as well, not sure it's a good thing

Volcano's may normally switch the polarity of their magma and this could be part of the mechanism that shows how it gets ejected in such volume (IDK just guessing).

You have the whole thing backwards, actually.

Magma has no polarity as it is well above the Curie point. What happens is that, as lava cools, it takes the set of the local magnetic field, a fossil of the field, as it were. This is how the past magnetic reversals are known to have occurred.

Your source article is a worse than average case of consumer science gone bad. Spinning compasses, pfft.

Xtalization can freeze geo - magnetism. Even ancient Chinese pots retain a "ghostly" magnetic alignment in their fired, and cooled, clay molecules. In a manner of speaking, those fired pots are doing the same thing as active volcanoes today.

The advantage with a lava flow is that it pretty much stays put so the orientation of the local field can be determined. Clay pots get moved around so they aren't much good for that.

can someone explain what happens after the crater collapses?

is that good or bad?

Can you explain what you mean by "crater collapses?"

A Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) mission on May 31, 2018, captured the dramatic changes occurring within Halemaumau crater since the explosive eruptions of ash and gas along with the ongoing crater wall collapse began in mid-May.

is that normal?

What I have wondered about, is why you have to dip a steel rod to where the North Pole is, when you strike it with a hammer, in order to temporarily magnetize it, for picking up small screws and brads, at a construction site? If geo magnetism flows across the Earth's surface, why is the rod's dipping necessary?? Why shouldn't simply pointing it, horizontally to magnetic North, be enough??

As a dowser, I can swing an angle rod and also find magnetic North, on a cloudy day, with no direct sunlight. But there's no dipping necessary, when doing a dowse.

Yes, when the lava lake which occupies the crater drains there is nothing to support the walls of the crater so they flake off, into the empty space. Rockfalls, like from any sheer cliff face.

The lake had been there for the past 30 years or so, until it drained last month.

is it going to return and is this normal?

I read somewhere that a large violent explosion can also happen due to the draining, but this can also mean that it's going dormant correct?

If history is a guide, yes, it will return.

There have been several violent steam explosions already, as expected when the level of the lava falls below the water table.

Ancient Chinese potters made some very large pots. Some of these were fired in situ, and their furnaces were what was torn down, and probably recycled. Plus ancient Amerindians would dig into a clay bank, in the midwest, and fire it to make an oven to cook wild rice, in order to free the husks. Once iron pots became available, these hot rocks ovens were abandoned. But some of them go back a long ways, and they're still, in cut banks, where they started out as ovens.

ahhhh ok, but not a precursor to a much larger violent steam explosion?

Why do you care one way or another if the compass was moving while flying over the eruption? Why would you not see the part about the Volcano collapsing and sealing ? Poking at crater instead of use of other names?

Because if it did so it would be extraordinary. Especially if it was "spinning uncontrollably" as claimed in that stupid article in your OP.

Why would you not see the part about the Volcano collapsing and sealing ?
I saw it. I've explained the phenomenon several times, in several threads, in a futile (apparently) effort to dispense the doom mongering.
