See...that's the thing. I've only met maybe 5 or 6 men in my life...that talked about it, anyway...who have been concerned about passing on their genes. Doesn't mean they don't absolutely love their kids...just that until they have actual tiny people to love, it's pretty much a non-issue.

But, it is a risk/reward equation. And the risk has been increasing exponentially for at least decades, while the reward has been becoming less and less likely, for men.

I had decided that getting married and having kids was a non-starter for me, after my first marriage crumbled. She is a highly intelligent woman, who has happily gone on to have a couple of great and successful kids. But, we were not tempermentally suited to each other.

A few years later, I was living with my girlfriend...who was/is my sister's best friend...and I got overly curious and asked her if she didn't want to get married and have kids one day. And she said yes she did. So my follow-up question, was to ask why she had never ever so much as mentioned the M-word.

Her reply was an indicator of her excellent practicality. She told me that I had always been quite clear on my stance of never getting married again, so what would be the point of bringing it up? Not noticing that I was already in the quicksand up to my knees, I went ahead and asked her, "What are you doing with me, then?"

Her reply was simple, and guileless...and cut deeply into my fog of male emotional response. She said, "Well, I love you!"

That was probably the moment my goose was cooked. Because I loved her too...and you can't really unknow things. So I thought about it for some time...we were about 30 or so then...and really enjoying our relationship. And eventually we negotiated a deal that took both our needs and desires into account. We got married with the understanding that we would wait five years to have kids.

And almost before I realized it, those great fun years flew by. And then it was my turn to hold up my end, as she had admirably held up hers. And I spent the entire pregnancy being fairly "Meh" about the whole thing...up to and including during labor.

Then, at the moment of her birth...which was a few minutes before midnight on Superbowl Sunday...and by C-section, since she was upside down and refused to turn over all day, and my wife was a big football fan...I saw my daughter for the very first time. I had been present and assisted in many many births, as a First Responder. So the process itself held little wonder fear or mystery to me.

And it wasn't even unexpected to me, as I had so many male friends who had gone through the same process, and assured me that it is different with your own kids. But, it was like Qod had reached down, stuck It's finger into the back of my brain, and flipped a switch. I went from meh to "That's my baby!", in an instant.

We never were able to make the transition from being parents, back to being lovers though...probably a hormonal thing, in retrospect. And while I know that she agrees that having and raising our daughter was the best thing we have ever done in our lives, when she was grown, we no longer had anything else in common.

We divorced amicably. No male I know, thought that my not getting a divorce lawyer was a wise choice. I just told her to have it drawn up, and I would sign. We split everything along the lines we had always assumed and trusted were inherent in our relationship. Unlike every single other divorced man I have ever known, she did not try to screw me over, despite the huge pressure to, from her friends and family.

We just travelled a few months ago to our daughter's wedding. Amazing party! And her relatively new husband and I had a blast together. He is a very cool guy, and I'm very happy for her that she found someone who floats her boat again! She deserves to be happy.

I'm mostly hermitting up these days, and not looking for a relationship. But, I know that if one comes along, I won't give up my own needs and comforts in any way, just to "be with someone". I actually believe in actual egalitarianism. And thus far my track record, is that I only have relationships with very smart and good women.

Same in my experience, we paid the court £50 for the forms and filled them out ourselves. Even played 'best of three' poker to decide who was the petitioner because neither of us wanted to be the one initiating the divorce.
My ex-wife is my most trusted and deeply loved friend, we were crap as husband and wife, but as a parenting team fantastic.

I was speaking of this thread. From my perspective it is you, and we.
You only seem to appeal to a splatter of ideals anyone wants to emulate or lift up in any way.
