Scientist increases anti-matter capture 50 fold!

Up until now, the high speed anti-protons generated in accellerator collision were slowed down for capture by thin metal foils, at a price however, a lot of antimatter got annihilated in the process, now a Japanese scientist has managed to use resonancing electrical field and increase the capture efficiency by orders of magnitudes.

Anti-matter is the exact polar opposite of normal matter, an example being hydrogen having a positive charge and anti-hydrogen, the anti-matter equivalent of hydrogen is the same atom, but with a negative charge.

It ccould be used as a weapon, but it would be the most devestating weapon inknown history.

If its that powerful...it'd never be used...it would defeat the purpose of the user...it would destroy the planet...but then again...there are some wackoo's out there...

It would take a very large amount to completely destroy Earth, to the point of it being a debris field, when it becomes economicly viable, and the technologie to make it in large amounts at a fast rate, it will be used, in anti-matter powerplants to power the world, and as a energy source for space-craft.

And since its coming from like an atom wouldnt it be kinda the same as nuclear power?

When matter and anti-matter collide they explode producing a huge amount of power, now if you collect this power, you can use it as a power source.
Its different from nuclear power because we colliding one thing with its exact opposite, instead of breaking one.

I believe that you're exaggerrating a bit.

A gram of anti-matter (although that much doesn't exist in a single unit on Earth), would be about the size of a raisin.

This single gram would have the energy equivalent to the Space Shuttles main engines and SRB's w/ payload for orbital insertion.

Still it's quite impressive numbers!

Didn't mean to dis you and you're right, a fraction of amount (which is an overstatement), would be needed to power the United States (for three days).

I've never seen numbers on this although if you could find the table for what the U.S. requires and find the energy output on one G of anti-matter, then a close approximation could be figured.

Just of the top of my head, I don't believe it'll be enough to fill the fuel tank of a Honda Civic!

I suggest you all really have a look at theoretical Anti-matter propulsion engines designed by Lockheed and the skunkwerks. Honestly, I am amazed at the lack of knowledge here at these speculations. a sustained Anti-matter explosion would have ORDERS of magnitiude more engergy than even a theoretical sustained FUSION reaction could produce, and we don't even have working Fusion reactors yet, basically due to funding constraints worldwide. they have almost hit the breakeven point though, there is that. The point being, 1 gram of Antimatter would have devistating destructive power, the 1 gram of antimater would ANNIHILATE 1 gram of matter. that means they both cease to exist, the matter is DESTROYED. that, under all normal forms of physics, is not possible with any form of matter with other matter. the power released would be astronomical, scientists to this point have only ever collected perhaps 5 atoms a month, world wide. Not enough to power a Civic? Utterly hilarious.

john titor has already pretty much been proven a fraud, as non of the # he said would happen in 2004 happened.

Im just as shocked because ive read and studied this for weeks. Think about this.... that magnetic field that keeps anti-matter away from its opposite fails, you have a big BANG! With nuclear reactors you have safeguards and time to stop a catastrophic event. With anti-matter you have less than a fraction of a second.

you know, this thread made me re read some of his posts, and i have changed my mind.

reason being he said a waco like incident would happen almost every month in late 04, and i believe they have.

either way back ON TOPIC this really could open a lot of doors for science, and especially space travel

Just to clarify the quantity of energy that results from matter/antimatter annihilation. Assuming such annihilation releases all the energy the matter & antimater has, ala E=mc squared:-


A gram of antimatter, in annihilation with a gram of matter would produce 1.8x10^14 Joules, or One Hundred And Eighty Thousand Billion Joules! Nice.
