Ashamed or Proud to be British

Hello All, I have been a member for a little while now and really enjoy reading about things the media would NEVER publish. But one thing catches me and that is people saying how ashamed or how proud they are to be British. If you were to ask me I would say I am proud to be british but I am VERY ashamed of our government c'mon Mr Blair sort it out! One of the reasons for being proud is the fact that we colonized most of the world YET we reside in one of the smallest land mass on the planet does anyone have a logical explanation for this?? My own personal opinion is that we used this particular land mass due to it being on a tectonic plate so we get very little geological activity I believe that this is because hundreds of years ago we realised that this particular land mass is quite strong and a smaller land mass is easier to provide protection for than a larger land mass much like russia or the states. So please any comments or opinions on why we are such a small yet powerful country??? And why you are either proud/ashamed to be british?

Hello Hunting Veritas, welcome to ATS. Im British and proud of it.

Well, Iam 110% proud to be British, and its common knowledge that history started in 1066 But yea your point about us being a small land mass. I think its because we have always been a nation of fighters. From when we where Britions fighting Rome(Not so successfully), To the countless repled invasions to WW1 and WW2. Though-out history we have proved our self worthy of being called a Nation of fighters (Agincourt for example).

Although, As we progess through history I find out how curroupt our goverment is.Such as cheating the Arabs in Palestine(WW1) to the war on Iraq and how some, dont get me wrong Im no way racist but the goverment makes you racist when some Somali comes to the country, does bugger all and gets a good house and car where as people who work all there life are fooked around by the goverment.

But Never-the-less I Britain and all her lands and her peoples,her goverment could do with being shot but then again. Not everything can be good

I dont exactly have a twisted desire for her, i just believe that she was good for British interests. She put the Great in Great Britain. And since Labour was elected in 97, theres not that many people left in the world that refer to us as Great Britain.

It is true about us being a nation of fighters but there is still no explanation as to why we plotted ourselves on such a small island when we quite easily could have had something alot bigger??? Why do YOU think this is? It would be interesting to hear other peoples opinions and comments.

Britain is a fortress. If we had picked somewhere bigger we would have been more vunerable to attack. The only other place on earth that i think we should have stayed is Australia. The only two true island fortifications that are still small enough to protect are The UK and Australia.

Around the political side of ATS (P@ATS) anywho who'd vote Tory is often refered to as a 'Tory Boy' as we have so many Labour and Lib Dem supporters around.

I for one am very proud to be British, and also proud to be Scottish (No Jock jokes)

But like other people have said I ain't proud of our Goverment. Actually that is not strictily true, I think compared to the Thatcher years our Goverment is more open with the populace. However we seem to have a weak leader who seems to follow Bush's led to often.

Bring back Iron Maggie, I am all for but we a party which has more moderate policies for Social Welfare.

Blair is better for us in the day 2 day running of our country, but Maggie would stand for no S**t off the rest of the world (The falklands for example). Saying that if Iron Maggie was still in charge no doubt we would be at war with NK, Iran, Iraq, Syria, and probably alot more.

Now this is one of the reasons britain is GREAT. We know how to talk to people unlike the americans who would take action first ask questions later. For just one example look at iraq, just for the record this is just another "Problem, Reaction, Solution." Due to the fact that iraq had virtually nothing, which in theory made them the most vulnerable for an attack, I now believe that america is now having a gander at which is the next country they should attack due to weak defenses, I beleieve they are starting at the bottom and slowly but inevitably moving up the middle east country ladder and Britain is following them among other countries. The question is why now? Why didn't we do this 20 years ago! And it is absolute Bull if someone says that "It's because we/others didn't have the capabilities."

I personally dont believe that Iran, NK or Syria are weak countries.

I did not mean to make them sound weak at all but they have no competition against a couple of countries armys when they decide to invade in which case Iran, Nk, Syria will be stuffed. Dependent on which country they decide to take first. Why do you think that the US are using unmaned planes?? I do not mean to stray from the subject Sorry.
