And Jesse James is my fifth cousin. But for all you folks who claim ancestry back to the English monarchs, do the math. Either use 4 or 5 generations
per century. 5 would have people reproduce at 20, 4 at 25. Let's use 4. So back to 1500 = 20 generations, so
1500 = 2^20 = 1,048,576 ancestors with a world population estimated at 425-500 million
1400 = 2^24 = 16,777,216 with a world population estimated at 350-400 million
1300 = 2^28 = 268,435,456 with a world population estimate of 300 million
1200 = 2^32 = 4,294,967,296 with a world population estimate of 275 million
Historical population estimates vary WIDELY and WILDLY, but they hardly matter. The fact is that your number of ancestors far exceeds the world
population by the time you get 1000 years back. Obviously there is lots of overlap, lots of cousins marrying cousins and lots of "dual positions" for
your ancestors. But the overall point is that when you claim you're related to William the Conqueror, well, of course you are. We all are. You're
related to Julius Caesar and Ghengis Khan, too.
