The Olympics start today.
The luge is up first and the opening ceremony is on Friday.

I'm waiting for the curling event, nothing like bowling with rocks.

This is of course another Olympics from hell.
Rio was going to be nothing but problems and well it wasn't.
South Korea will be damn cold and the flu is really a problem too. Didn't Canada have issues with the weather being to warm? Now it's to cold.

I haven't heard anything about all the wild sex hookups yet but I'm sure shared body heat is the best way to stay warm. I remember a story about the amount of condoms sent to rio.
Guess the flu might not be the only thing being passed around.

What do you look forward to watching?

Any where they can really hurt themselves I'm in it for the crashes sorry but at least I'm honest.
Hope no one dies though but some of these guys are crazy...you have to be bonkers to try the luge.

It will be interesting to see how the men's US hockey team will fare. The NHL has forbidden their players from participating this time, so the team will have a blend of college kids, retired NHL players, and current AHL players. I'd rather have the current NHLers in there, but it will be interesting to see how this team comes together in the tournament. Bobsled, luge, snowboarding, and giant slalom are all entertaining as well.

Can't wait.

I canner wait to see if they ban the Russians entirely or just make them wear grey uniforms without any Russian insignia.

What a power trip. Sort of discrimination in reverse? The Nazis required the Jews to wear badges to identify them. In these Olympics , the Russians aren't supposed to be identified.

What a quack up.

I too look forward to the bowling of rocks, or as I call it the sweepstakes.

My favorite would have to be the one where the skiers do a superman impersonation, they soar through the air for hundreds of feet, it's even better when you have Wagner's 'ride of the Valkyries' stuck in your head. Then you have the ice hockey which is brutal, to quote the late Rodney Dangerfield 'I went to a riot one day and an ice hockey game broke out.'

I am very excited. I have a fascination with Korean culture traditional and modern. I really like learning about other countries, their lives, their food, etc... and Korea has been on my mind for the last 10 years. We are dying to go sometime. I hope everyone there has fun and makes lots of new friends and I hope they all take some time to get to know one another and their traditions/ ways of doing things where they come from. I hope everyone is respectful to the land, and to the people who reside there full time.

My only worry is that I've heard historically the Olympics are very taxing on the location that hosts them. Seoul seems to have a decent supply of money though so maybe it will be okay. I'm extra excited about North Korea attending as well. I hope everything is peaceful. They deserve to get out and see the world too.

I was waiting for a thread like this to show up! (too lazy and inexperienced to create one myself)

Ice hockey fan here. So i will watch all Team Finland games and the final regardless of who play it. I would like the idea of the olympics being the competition of the best of the best. Therefore i would have wanted NHL players to participate.

Also a little bit of snowboarding. Not a hardcore fan but slope style is cool.

No interest in hockey.
We have a minor league type of team near me that is real popular that I have been to a few times.
Just can't get into the game.
That and i can see that all the time.

I prefer the sports that I don't have available all the time like bobsledding and shnowboard.

I'll get completely sucked in. I don't seem to care about any of these sports (except hockey) for the better part of four years, but once it's Olympics time, I'm the moron who doesn't get enough sleep because the women's alpine skiing was on at midnight, and I simply can't miss that!

For the "female" or the "skating"?

I'm not big into any sports where someone judges who wins.

Well let's put it this way, I don't watch the men's event. Watching Female Figure Skating confirms to me that I missed my calling in life as a brothel madam.

Well, we really don't know anymore which sports have female or males participating-or do we find out later? All the sports are entertaining but the nighttime is the real action and that's not televised-yet.

Will feminism eliminate the gender split in Olympic sports?
If an athlete identifies as female do you have to let "her" compete in women's sports?

I feel like the Olympics used to be such an event that the country talked about and got excited about when I was younger.

I understand why they did it, but when they split the Olympics apart (1/2 of it every 2 years as opposed to all of it every 4 years) it seemed to really dull the whole thing. Having it every 4 years and all at the same time made it into so much more of a big deal.

...

I'm not huge into winter olympics. I guess I would have to say ski jumping, snowboarding and women's skating (not JUST because of the women, it's really impressive).

Boxing is the best (hardest sport in multiple ways & most entertaining), then I'd have to say women's gymnastics (those girls do INSANE stuff, no perving on 14 year olds).

They need to bring back Pankration. Just make it MMA rules.

Hi again!

Tonight is men's slope style qualifications. If i have trouble sleeping again, i will watch. In Finnish time, 3:50 AM to 7 AM. I won't set an alarm clock for it, if it was Finland playing hockey i would.

In the last winter olympics in Sochi, Sage Kotsenburg from U.S.A. took the gold medal. I would embed the video of the run, but the uploader does not allow it to be watched via other websites than youtube and gives an error message. There are other videos of the same run, i think they are taken by audience with smartphones and doesn't give you the idea like the "official" video. So if you are a snowboarding fan, or you have no idea what slope style is but would like to find out, the video in youtube is titled "Sage Kotsenburg's Gold Winning Snowboard Slopestyle Run | Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics"
