Ok so this thread is a hypothetical thought experiment

in that we are thinking about how to correct our species downfalls in one time travelling trip

Now you have to think carefully about when and where and who

In your opinion what singular moment would change human history if it never happened or happened differently
and you are only allowed to pick on time , one place ,person , group etc

So think about it and pick one moment in time which you could change or alter in some fashion in order to undo the injustices that we face today.
You should state the time, the moment, the person the place, the event .
Why you'd change it and why you think it would change , what is important about it .

I am still currently thinking about which moment id try to change

The reason i'm doing this is because I want to know what we all think is the reason why we are in such a state
also the outcome should be beneficial to humanity so nothing can change which would make it worse!

bearing in mind that in order for this to work we suspend reality in that time travel is real and that one event can change the entire future of our species for the better.

Lets hear your thoughts

The problem isnt our chronology. Its our nature. And how 'nobody' likes to unthink it.

Awww you are meant to play the game ! but yeh I totally agree that we humans in our very nature are our own worst enemies
is it our ego that makes us terrible ?

You have brought up a very good point though , what can we change about our nature then ?

So your answer would be preventing genetic "adam " and "eve" from producing their offspring or from ever mating with others and thus preventing the rise of homo sapiens sapiens!

maybe this place is better off without us eh!

First thought would be to make the call to stop the terrorists from boarding the planes on September 11th.

I go find Eve and tell her to stay the f* off that tree, whatever the snake says.

there's a certain monster born in 1913 that there were several key points in history that could have stopped it, but now it's too late- it has stripped all but the one percent of their natural born rights.

you always have to worry about these sorts of things, though. for all you know, the tightly packed population of put folks could have generated a plague if they hadn't been wiped out by Nazi Germany. killing Hitler as a baby? maybe someone better suited to take over the world finds his place.

prevent 9/11? well, if it was an inside job, the next one might have been a nuke in Chicago. tptb sure got their slice of cake out of that tragedy, didn't they?

if time travel wad possible, it would wind up in the hands of the government. they've proven time and time again they cannot be trusted with unlimited power...

That's the rub isn't it? Changing the course of history could have even worse results. Stop 9/11 and instead, somebody smuggles in a dirty bomb or full fledged nuke. Take out Hitler before his rise to power and someone worse rises up instead.

i would prevent certain group from claiming land on different continents or small islands.
with that, then theres no need to go back and prevent A-bombs, manufactured diseases, most wars , or any other nonsense; if only a single group didnt begin this downward spiral...

the problem with this hypothetical situation is that no one will ever be sure if this, the timeline you live in now, is in fact the first instance of time, or the first time everything is happening.
theres no way to know if the Future hasn't already passed, nor can we know if changing one thing in history can actually alter the future. for all we know, nothing can change anything.

The problem with mankind is that if you remove the person that pushed the button, there with be another person willing to push the button.

You might change the details or dates things happen but bad things will still happen so why mess with it.

First of all we can't change time, if they could say, come from the future and fix it here and there, they would have already. Things would be just peachy keen all the time...

Hitlers father beat him so bad once, he left him for dead. The time travelers should have made sure he was dead.

Everything exist in a balance. So no matter how many times we travel back in time to prevent an event, this event is going to happen or something equivalent to it will happen.
Is something we can not control.

So any event can be postponed but not eliminated.

And we are not even considering the aftermath of changing something in the past.

I think ignorant is right , we cant go back and make one event fix everything ,its our very nature that leads us to ruin!
we need to address our own nature , the evil within

the klingons say you cant be a warrior unless you defeat the enemy within

sun tzu says

"The opportunity to secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself"

So it seems the answer to changing our very nature lies within us , another good quote ive recently read
by Ashley Montagu in the 1910 UN committee on anthropology

"Biological studies lend support to the ethic of universal brotherhood; for man is born with drives towards cooperation and unless those drives are satisfied, men and nations alike fall ill...In this sense every man is his brothers keeper. For every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main, because he is involved in mankind."

The key word there is co-operation it seems we are meant to work together to achieve our goals
however no matter how good people are , there is always something that sets us back , we always have to have differing opinions. For example for the most part people want to be good , but then we cant decide on which version of good
it has to be good under his church or , good in that teaching, or good in that way of life

there is far too much division.

In any case if there was one event I could change , it would probably be something like sinking christopher colombus before he made south america, or stopping the assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand to prevent the first world war.
Something to stop the huge loss of life

or stopping the chimp from touching the monolith !

Yes we'd need to fix things in the present ! and that to me means fixing me, then expanding outward !

As others have said, the problem is with humans themselves. There's really nothing that could be changed to make us all "just get along" If we were all the same skin color and religion, we'd find some other reason to dislike a group of people.

But choosing an event...

How about the writers of the Declaration of Independence instead of saying "all men are created equal" said something along the lines of "all men and women, regardless of race, creed or religion, are created equal"

Yes, it is a U.S.A. thing, but that's where I am and it might have changed things drastically. But see the first paragraph.

If you changed something back then... everything about it would never have existed. Neither would questions here regarding it.. because the issues and need to question them now... would not exist to talk about...because they were corrected as to not exist.

So in essence our whole existence is somewhat paradoxical in nature ?

Kind of...as a lot of movies we watch. They always mention "just observe"....and dont "initiate an encounter with yourself there".

Change anything...even minutely...and you in the "now"...the"today"...the "here"... wouldnt exist as you changed forever the advance of that time, person, situation, event.

If you went back and fixed or changed something? Then you wouldnt have a question about something that you stopped from existing. Think about it!

Any change in the past would just split that past off into an alternate universe in which that changed timeline would continue. The current universe would continue as if no change was made. For the rest of us , nothing was changed. Of course , you would be in the spun-off universe with maybe no chance to return to your original time-line in the future as it would not exist for you anymore.
That is the gist of the "Grandfather Paradox"

If Hitler had been admitted to the art academy it could have radically changed history for the better.
He didn't handle rejection very well.
He was a decent painter.
