In true California fashion, their legislatures embrace illegal immigration, yet think that plastic straws are the scourge of the world.

Calif ornia lawmaker's proposal makes serving plastic straw without request a crime

A lawmaker in California reportedly introduced a bill last week that would make it a criminal offense for any person in a restaurant to serve a patron a plastic straw in their drinks without it being requested.

The penalty would be up to six months in jail or $1,000 fine or a combination, The Washington Examiner reported.

“We need to create awareness around the issue of one-time use plastic straws and its detrimental effects on our landfills,” Ian Calderon, a Democrat in the state’s assembly said, according to the report.

They don't prosecute illegal entrants, but I guess the last straw is plastic for them.

SMH....

Making it a criminal offense is a little overboard but what do I know... I'm not in that career path for a reason.

I saw recently that Pizza Express has moved on to biodegradable paper straws after a 5 year old or something to that effect wrote a very sweet letter asking they consider the effects of bits of plastic gathering up all over the world and in our oceans and in the mouths and noses and orifices of animals.

I thought that was touching. I think this is a little over kill- but again.... what do I know?

Already a thread on this, and no one is doing jail time. This is stupid. They are going to have to ask their server if the guest wants a straw. That's it. Why? Because millions and millions are thrown away everyday, and end up in a landfill where they do not break down, as they are plastic.

What a stupid observation, on California's end. NOT, They are right. Why waste? This is being way blown out of proportion, as usual.

Why not simply make it a law that these straws must be biodegradable instead? That would make more sense, and make a larger impact on the landfills. But then, there is no revenue stream doing that, is there?

I think I read somewhere when this was first posted on ATS, that some may switch to Biodegradable straws.

Beware the rudimentary phallic shaped plastic monster, lest you be seen as accepting of the Patriarchy.

But yeah, that whole biodegradable thing too.

When will they declare requesting a straw is akin to white supremacy?
Or, the final insult, "think of the children"?

Why make another thread when one already exists? Gotta get that daily outrage. Nice false equivalency, shoehorning in white supremacy as a victimization ploy.

Lol.

Less than ten seconds to find, first thread on the search function.

Sounds like a play from the Bloomberg handbook.

Perhaps because the search function here stinks?
Nah, that's too simple a reason I created another thread isn't it?

So, any comments on the topic itself?

I think it’s a rather good idea. Maybe a little overboard on the fines but it’s a start.

God forbid that people are actually trying to save the planet... you would think people actually want the earth to become toxic wasteland.

I agree, and was just joking with the Bloomberg meme. However, I think the bans should be done on a big scale.
Start phasing out all the plastic crap we can. I think Seattle is doing it. (Now if only they could get a handle on all the junkies running around)

I saw a PSA recently where a woman grocery shopped at WalMart and it took 18 plastic bags to hold her stuff.
That's horrible. WalMart doesn't have paper bags. The conscientious people bring their own canvas bags when they shop. Sadly, you don't see many of them.

Why the hell would I bring my own bags to go shopping?

Talk about inconvenient and annoying.

One more reason to shop online.

The bags they use now disintegrate on the way from the grocery checkout to my car as it is...there is no way they aren't biodegradable already. Sometimes I think people go out of their way to make their lives more difficult.

Ruining someone's life or a frakking straw is beyond stupid. There are better intelligent ways of trying to help the environment than punishing a waiter or waitress for a draconian obligation..

Then again. Kommiefornia is the land of lunatics.

Same penalty as giving someone AIDS, knowingly.

Maybe they should go after the companies that hire illegals that make the straws?
