I'm still amazed by the magnificent photos I see my friends take of the Milky Way
Yes, the Milky Way is an extraordinary thing. Visible from where I live.
I am encouraged by groups who campaign for dark skies. Turning off street lights and all that. Sure, you'll never see a star if you live in London,
but there's hope for people who live in rural areas.
The biggest threat to the Milky Way is apathy and people with smartphones stuck to their faces. Never looking up. Never caring to look up.
At least my 17 year old son can name the constellations, so he'll at least be able to start a conversation on a dark night with his girlfriend!
EDIT to add that my father taught me the night sky. He was an army helicopter pilot and it was part of navigation back in the day.
