Indian Slavery Once Thrived in New Mexico. Latinos Are Finding Family Ties to It.

Mr. Trujillo is one of many Latinos who are finding ancestral connections to a flourishing slave trade on the blood-soaked frontier now known as the American Southwest. Their captive forebears were Native Americans — slaves frequently known as Genízaros (pronounced heh-NEE-sah-ros) who were sold to Hispanic families when the region was under Spanish control from the 16th to 19th centuries. Many Indian slaves remained in bondage when Mexico and later the United States governed New Mexico.

Didn't realized, how pervasive the slave trading was between 1st nation folks and Iberians were, and how long it lasted, interesting correlation in Genzaros and Jenissaris slaves from the Caucasus bought and sold throughout the East, even the act of forming buffer between them and more hostile native forces against the Spanish.

Interesting too that they kicked the Spanish forces back into Mexico for at least a little bit.

I didn't know Indians were from America, nice work New York Times.

Aside from that monumental eff up, it doesn't surprise me in the least. I can imagine that up to the Spanish American war there were spoils of war, and back then humans were a commodity.
