right sorry bout that, here it is:

Massive Asteroid Careers Towards Earth

Armageddon: Well, not this time, but the giant space rock will miss by a cosmic whisker

A giant asteroid is speeding towards the Earth, space scientists said today.

The massive rock, almost a quarter of a mile wide, was on a one-chance-in-60 collision course with the planet – though most observers now believe the odds to be a fraction of this.

However, the space rock will come so close that it will pass between the Earth and orbiting telecommunications satellites – and, at 22,600 miles, will be the nearest miss in recorded history.

It will also be visible with the naked eye from the UK mainland.

If the asteroid were to hit Earth, the resulting explosion would be the equivalent to a direct strike with 20 hydrogen bombs.

Vast areas of the planet would be transformed into wasteland, or, if it hit the ocean, a giant tsunami would be generated.

Professor Mark Bailey, director of the Armagh Observatory, said: “I think everyone is saying that it is going to miss, though you will be able to see it with a small telescope or even the naked eye.

“It is like being on a train station platform and watching an express train go by three feet away.

“You’re close but it’s not dangerous.”

The asteroid, called MN4, will skim Earth on Friday, April 13 2029.

There is a lot of post on this subject already here on ATS. You can use search to find if news or information is allready reported here. Also this probably should probably be in the Fragile Earth forum even though asteroids are in space.

A lucky break on Friday the 13th, 2029: giant asteroid will narrowly miss earth
By Steve Connor, Science Editor
15 February 2005

A giant asteroid the size of three football pitches will make the closest flyby of Earth in recorded history for an object of its size, scientists said yesterday.

It will pass between the Earth and the Moon and will even come closer than the orbit of many telecommunications satellites, although astronomers insisted that there was little chance of a collision with the massive rock.

Edit: Or.....just go to the link Dr. Horacid posted.
I should pay more attention

yeah its supposed to actually pass between the earth and telecommunication satelites!if its that close how can it not hit us? its crazy!!

makaveli_81! Take it somewhere else, please. Trolls arn't very welcome here on ATS. If you have nothing constructive to say, don't say anything at all.

And be glad folks... originally they thought it would hit us. Of course though, a few years back NASA did say if they knew something would hit us they would downplay it or not even release the knowledge to the public. Just something to keep in mind.

I'm sure there are other ways to say this, as well as contribute to the discussion... I can see you have two warns already.... I didn't give them to you, but I'm assuming it's because of your posts in this thread. Please heed those warns though, and please take the advice of any of the mods who issued them.

Thanks,

Gaz.

Maybe equivalent to 20 Russian 100Mt "country buster".

Using quarter mile size and conservative other values its impact energy would be something like 1700 megatons.
Compare that to yield of typical nukes which are 0.2-0.5 megatons at most.

Well I for one want them to tell us I am not going to clean house at all on that day and I mean the day that an asteroid is expected to hit earth. I'm going to do something constructive on that day like a have a good bottle of wine and I am going to spring for the expensive stuff and maybe take a few pain pills and go outside and moon all the people I don't like as they drive by.lol
