Was just getting ready to post this, really hope they are able to get to safety in the event this thing hits.

Is there a confirmed tsunami or is this precautionary?

There was a 7.2 precursor at 1.51am (UTC)

The hopefully main quake is listed as either 7.6 or 7.8 depending on source and happened at 2.51am (UTC)

No after shocks as yet.

So ... there could still be another larger one on it way. Let's hope not.

Fred, according to another source (RT news) the event did generate multiple warnings

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake has struck in the Caribbean Sea north of Honduras, triggering multiple tsunami warnings in the area, including for the coasts of Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands.

Hopefully FEMA is prepared to immediately take action in the event of a tsunami

Does this also cover Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands? I saw another source claiming there were warnings issued? Hopefully the USGS report also applies to PR and Virgin Islands!

I think so, PR & the Virgin Islands have an advisory for hazardous waves. Basically, a rough seas advisory, not so much a tsunami warning.

That's good news. I think the quake was too deep for a big Tsunami. It was close though. Japan was 20km if I remember correctly.

Is this ANOTHER earthquake with potential tsunami? There's an earlier ATS thread describing one near Puerto Rico.
