Even though Macron beat Le Pen in 2017, I take it that "fake news" published in social media, was not in his favor?

Emmanuel Macron has vowed to introduce a law to ban fake news on the internet during French election campaigns.

The French president, who beat the far-right Marine Le Pen to win 2017’s election, said he wanted new legislation for social media platforms during election periods “in order to protect democracy”.

In his new year’s speech to journalists at the Élysée palace, Macron said he would shortly present the new law in order to fight the spread of fake news, which he said threatened liberal democracies.

Is this technically possible? Furthermore, is it legal to do in France? French Presidents must have more power/authority than U.S. Presidents.

I've heard that leaders of European countries are thinking more like Donald Trump as of late. Is that true?

When I read that Macron was "introducing legislation" to alter social media content, I couldn't understand how. Still can't. Is the general public really as dumb as politicians think we are? That we need to be "protected" against seeing "fake news" on the internet?

There will be a problem finding a legal definition of fake news.

Well it's good to see that France does have some checks/balances in place after all. I was thinking that Macron was going to decide what was/was not fake news, like a dictator would.

Somehow I think that after years of inaction, apart from some superficial actions to "move the problem on", our French allies won't deal with all the unregistered illegal migrants trying to get to England everyday. Good if they did, but France's policy seems to run that if they get to England it's not our problem.

On fake news. Good for the French. Fake news is designed to warp the gullible and impressionable mind. We have a case study into how it happens when you look at some of the Russian-reported "news" on MH17, much of which was consumed and reported as "fact" on ATS.

To add (by edit)... The worrying thing is that we'll end up with political "Truth councils" who will kill fake news, but also news that they don't want the population to know. The blind censor in a grey suit is a threat to democracy.

He could just scream fake news at anything critical of him and maybe post a meme with a frog also.
Many on here do it.

He's missed the point that people *choose* to use 'fake news.' Some love it.

Look at last year's examples. Clinton with a hole in her tongue and Trump paying to get peed on. Nobody with a brain cell believed these 'fake news' stories, but it didn't stop many from spreading them. They served the purpose of scoring political points.

In his new year’s speech to journalists at the Élysée palace, Macron said he would shortly present the new law in order to fight the spread of fake news, which he said threatened liberal democracies.

I wonder if 'fake news' threatens democracy or shines a light on what's wrong with it?

This neoliberal puppet Macron tries to copy the failure of "us" germans, of "our" censorminister Heiko Maas.
The name of that useless and stupid censoring law? Attention, one of our famous german terms:
Netzwerkdurchsetzungsgesetz (if a not german languaged person can repeat this three times without failure, i`ll buy him an ice cream xD)

Not only that it sounds like a tool of the Third Reich Nazis, but that censoring of "politically not correct" speech, to eliminate the freedom of speech of the opposing side. Here it is allegedly because of all that disgusting Nazi stuff, but political satire magazines were the first victims of that law.

And now that slimy GILF lover from france. Wants to copy that, to maybe(doesn´t look like this) win another election(he just won because france didn´t want the nazis in power, he was the lesser evil). They use this tool to censor everything that could harm them, if true or "fake news". The funny aspect of this is, "we", germany, show right now that this law doesn´t work as they, it´s creators, wish it would work. And it seems that this law will be abolished faster than it can censor it´s critics!

Btw, we don´t need such a "law" in germany, because we have laws that handle insults, offenses, abusive language etc. So if really somebody is such a wimp that he feels harmed by words from the internet, he can go to the court with that stuff(good if evidence is not censored and gone with that), and the court will do the rest, will find out if a post of a member, maybe from somewhere else on earth than germany(which sense makes such a lwa then?), a comment or whatever really was a crime or not. That´s their job. And not the job of foreign, multinational acting propaganda and spying corporations that try to shape the public opinion!

It´s just a sign of helplessness, of fear. Those neoliberal, market-friendly, controlled by thousands of lobbyists from the real rulers, those neoliberal suckers that call themselves "representatives of the people" feel and know exactly that the times of exploitation, of saving banksters and corporations with tax payers money, while more people get poor more and more but a little bunch of tax dodgers and moraly degenarated slave masters get richer and richer, that these time are over.

That their game of fooling the people doesn´t work anymore. To tell us how good we all live, if we need two or three jobs to pay our rent(because we have no money anymore to buy own houses), to bring food on the table and pay taxes and fuel for our cars, cars we mostly only need to do the slave wage jobs. You know, to taxes and fuel for the car, to pay rent and bring onto the table...

THEY fear US, the PEOPLE, the 90% of people below the upper crust!

And try to survive via big brother systems, total surveillance, censoring of everything they don´t want to read, hear and see. But that will make that what they fear" even worse, if SHTF in near future!

No, he didn´t take any pill. He is justing telling those people, he needs the voting voices from, what they want to hear to vote for him. Do you really trust politicians? If they just tell you what you want to hear, if this fits your world view? They all try it now, everywhere.

You just need to take a look at "our" local southern states party from bavaria, how they mutate now again to righwingers(they were ever, but thought it would be better trying to hide it), just to get the get voices from the monster-neoliberal AfD nazis back. It´s ridicolous, because everybody knows that, and those that try to copy the disgusting AfD nazis now, will lose the last voters to the real nazis, the AfD. If the poeple get fooled, they don´t vote for the fooling wannabe nazi copies, that are showing now again their rightwinger mind(they ever had), once again. But we germans have to be careful with that nevertheless, remember where Hitler started his "career"!

Thinking and Donald Trump in one sentence... but ok.
No, they try to get the voting voices back they lost to the rightwingers everywhere. Ok, Trump is obvisiously a rightwinger(if himself even really knows what that is) too, but he came late to the party. He is just the "U"S contribution to a world that shifts to the right, in parts. And as the world knows it, the "U"S and it´s hollywood and show behaviour make a huge show out of that Trump reign, like they do with all of their presidents and their reign, hoping that everybody on earth thinks that the POTUS must be the greatest human alive on earth.

Nobody of the stupid "representatives of the people"(in reality of the rich, the banksers, the "markets", the corporations...) in Europe boasts around that he has the biggest and mightiest button to destroy the world, that perfectly works. Nobody in europe is trying hard to start a war. Nobody in europe is openly ruled by a military junta. Turkey is just "a bit europe", territorial seen, and eastern europe, these miniature neo nazi states, are in reality not necessary for europe, it´s monster-corrupt no mans land between russia and europe). But the people in the west, in the east, in the north and in the south, have all one ting in common, they are all ruled by oligarchs, that rule from behind the curtains.

The only ones that act as if they would "think like Donald Trump" are exactly these eastern european states, that would still live in the 1950´s without the money of the western european tax payers. Those eastern european states that take, take and don´t give anything back, but act as little wannabe Hitler-Deutschlands. And as cannonfodder for the "U"S, as base for their weapons and military to surround russia, aganist all agreements, against all the lies that were made so Germany could unite. Btw, nobody asked us western german people if we wanted that reunification, i guess because we all knew that we have to pay for the east. And they give us something back... "national liberated zones", no go areas for sane and average people, nazi areas, whole towns and little cities are nazi infested. It seems to be a problem of the east, the more far you go to the east, the more nazi they are nowadays.

These that need the NATO, Euros and Dollars to provoke their arch enemy russia, these european states are happy to be the new "friends" of the "U"SA. But were rightwingers long before Trump. This is something new for them., we in western europe know what "friend- and partnership with the "U"S means:

"America" First and "You're either with us, or against us", even for wars basing on pure lies!

I'm not sure how he could do this. The internet is pretty much a cess pool of fake news to create traffic and make money from it. Click bait.
That fake news then gets spread around and eventually gets to the MSM. There isn't alot you can do about it. The media has to be smart enough and actually do some research before making it news.

I like that he's trying to do something, but stopping fake news is going to be very very difficult.

I don't know how they will determine exactly what 'fake' news is? Maybe they should start by going through History of the last 100 years of what people were told via TV news broadcasts and what was printed in the Newspapers??

I think you spotted the 'tell' here... "think" and "Trump" in the same sentence.

Clearly, the apparent statement supposedly from 'Macron' is "fake news" issued reportedly by the Macron organisation.

This tactic effectively puts Macron in control of both his own "fake news" and "real news", and grabbing more column inches overall.

Damn clever the French.
