Those quakes, coupled with all the quakes at the junction at the S. End over the last 2 months, and the 3-4 JUST east of the subduction fault off the coast of Oregon, would have me jittery if I lived there!

P.S. I know my punctuation sucks

I'm in White Rock which is considered Metro Vancouver. We are quite close to the water but are 300' up.

It was not so bad! It shook me about a bit... kind of like shaking off the excess floor after dredging your chicken!

No broken anything. No toppled anything. I went back to sleep after waiting for any aftershocks. Amazing to hear that it was 7.9 off of Kodiak and they got a tsunami warning with evacuations to higher ground.

Here is old footage of the 1964 9.2 Alaskan quake, tsunami footage at ~4:00 and ~7:00 minutes in.

A Japanese soldier has been killed in an avalanche in central Japan that may have been triggered by a volcanic eruption.

At least 11 people have also been injured, several of them critically.

The eruption sent rocks raining down over a kilometre-wide area near Kusatsu in central Japan, say local media.

Mount Kusatsu-Shirane, 150km (93 miles) north-west of Tokyo, erupted on Tuesday but officials are still investigating whether it caused the avalanche.

Images of the volcano showed a vent on its side appeared to have blown out, while video footage shows a large cloud of black ash and rock being thrown down the mountainside.

BBC.com, news, Jan. 23, 2018, 8 hours ago - Avalanche kills one in Japan ski resort after volcanic eruption.

PNG, Japan, AK, and within the last couple days, Chile and Mexico,... looks like the Ring of Fire is active.

I doubt that the activity is over either.

Kenai AK here

I'm so mad I slept through it......everybody here in my sober living facility woke up.

I did wake up at four in the morning to see a tsunami alert on my phone so I hopped on ATS to see if I was about to die. Even though I think it would take some extraordinary circumstances for a tsunami to hit land around here.

I almost slept through it! It lasted long enough so I just lay there like a slug wondering if it was going to build in strength. It didn't so I went back to sleep.

It is strange to wake up and see this all over the news with video of people from Kodiak driving away from the coastal areas.

Glad to hear that it was out in the Gulf and not like under the island itself. That would have been real bad.

Now we can get back to our other winter past times like looking for northern lights! Or sliding down the side of a mountain strapped into our board! And look, we are finally getting some new snow here in Anchortown! YAY!

A Ton of 4 mag aftershocks but only 1 5??

Look for the typical 1 mag less then first quake....6.9, coming right up

That's a big quake not to have a BUNCH of 5's.

Next time my phone rings at 1:30 in the morning I am gonna answer it.

If there had been a big tsunami, I'd probably be dead right now because I just complained about someone calling that late, rolled over and went back to sleep.

I won't make that mistake again.

With the big quake in Honduras and the biggy in Alaska..this quake could be significant..

Time will tell.

I have felt Cascadia is going to rupture very soon...but good ole Juan might go first.
