"This was not an act of homicide," Finnerty said. "He (Wright) voluntarily put this vest on and wanted to experience what a 20-gauge shotgun would do if he had this vest on."
A 20-year-old rural Crown Point man died early Thursday morning of a single gunshot wound to the chest he sustained during an incident in downtown Gary, officials said.
He said it isn't entirely clear why the three men were in Gary, but they told Gary police Detective Tom Decanter Jr. they had traveled to the city to purchase alcohol.
He said Wright was transported by two of his friends, both from Hobart, after the shooting at 41st Avenue and Broadway.
Three Hobart men were charged Friday in connection with the death of a friend who apparently asked to be shot while wearing a flak jacket, Hobart police Lt. Leo Finnerty said.
Police believe Daniel J. Wright, 20, formerly of Hobart and more recently of rural Crown Point, wanted to experience a gunshot firsthand before entering the military, but died shortly after a friend pulled the trigger.
"This was not an act of homicide," Finnerty said. "He (Wright) voluntarily put this vest on and wanted to experience what a 20-gauge shotgun would do if he had this vest on."

AQnd what does gun control have to do with anything? Are you a gun grabber? Go to politics and look up slug fest post, would love to finally have someone to argue with over gun laws.(That don't work, a criminal breaks the law, so a gun law, does not apply) Also, if it is an accident, you can't blame the gun and try to make laws against them. Why? Well, car accidents kill more. Drowning Accidents kill more. Cooking accidents kill more. So, unless you are going to make Anti-Cooking, Driving, and water laws, stop going after guns. More kids drown in mop buckets then are killed by guns, so lets ban mop buckets.
Anyways, this is why the Darwin Awards were created.

The Darwin Awards are gonna be great this year. This is the fourth story so far I think, in just a couple of months.
There was the guy who bet his balls against Wales. There was the Indian guy who removed his package, saying it was useless because his wife wouldn't sleep with him. There was the guy who shot his balls off during a bank robbery or something. What else? Oh, wasn't there a guy who died in a Tiger pen, or a Lion pen, while trying to preach Christianity to them? Or was that last year.
It's good to see evolution keeping up with humanity.

IMHO ------> Guns are stupid and a waste. Nothing productive comes from them. Not one productive thing. Nothing would make me happier than to see them all go away. Let the people who need em, have em. But I cant see a reason for any normal family to have a loaded 9 under the mattress. Just no good reason.
spliff4020 I respect your opinion but there are some gun owners such as myself who are prior military and take firearm ownership seriously. Yes it would be a perfect world if no-one had firearms but that is not the case. Regulation is the way to "attempt" to control firearms as best as the United States can. I personally have a Glock 19 "9mm" that is in a "quick combo" safe in my closet. I have young children and they are educated and have been educated about firearms since they could comprehend such teachings.
One of the things about firearm ownership that does frighten me is nearly "anyone" can purchase a firearem today. There are to many loopholes in the system.... and until then I will continue to be an owner.....
As for the no-good reason to have a loaded "9" I can think of multiple scenarios that would benifit having a firearm in your possession....
