Well, according to scriptures, vampires are real, but most of the time they are "asleep".

They emerge only every 14 generations. Then they run amok for a generation or two, and go back into deep sleep.

That's why we hear about "ethnic clensings" throughout history. Vampire suppression is done under the "fog of war". So, the population is kept in the dark. Most people don't even know vampires are real. They think it's all fiction. They never wonder where the "idea" behind the fictional stories came from.
