Why would someone who thinks the earth is flat even post in this thread, the replies so far are a bit of a put off. But they got me interested.
Many YouTube vids with Go pro and balloons. You can clearly see the earth goes round and flat and even inverse as the go pro bubbles around. Interesting.

Nothing to discuss really. Flat Earth is horsesh!t. There hasn't been many flat earth supporters on this site in recent years.

Though it would make for entertaining convo..

The movment is growing outside of this site which is pretty alarming for the age of information.

Or maybe we are now living in the age of disinformation.

It's almost as if someone flipped the loony switch on the world.

Seemingly out of the blue, kids are embracing communism en masse, everyone is a subgendernongendergenderlessundefinedspecies person, boys wear dresses, girls pee with men, history is being erased, the future is fractured... and it's not just in the corners of society, it's screaming from the roof tops.

if someone going through an existential crisis were watching, I'd go completely insane.

You could show a true flat earther all the valid, well presented, scientifically factual, peer reviewed and accepted, logical, demonstrably provable evidence, videos and lectures on things like this, and it would be a waste of energy on your behalf.

It's like trying to talk with the left - fingers in ears "You're a science zealot. Anything you say is made up by fake science."

It's how they breed. Survival of the stupidest. Which is all the more reason to be deeply concerned that there are legitimate people out there, more vocal than ever, who truly believe this nonsense.

I don't believe in Santa at all. Therefore I have no desire to even enter into a discussion about whether he is real or not.

The Backfire Effect

Once something is added to your collection of beliefs, you protect it from harm. You do it instinctively and unconsciously when confronted with attitude-inconsistent information. Just as confirmation bias shields you when you actively seek information, the backfire effect defends you when the information seeks you, when it blindsides you. Coming or going, you stick to your beliefs instead of questioning them. When someone tries to correct you, tries to dilute your misconceptions, it backfires and strengthens them instead. Over time, the backfire effect helps make you less skeptical of those things which allow you to continue seeing your beliefs and attitudes as true and proper.

I had read about this several years ago, but I feel like it's getting worse these days.

People confronted with information that discredits an idea reject the information or make up even more wild claims.

I think they make the claim that the lense distorts the image to make the earth look curved.
No matter what evidence you present they seem pretty dogmatic in their belief

Yeah my coworker is on that train. It's a conspiracy of fisheye lenses. He even claims that the windows on a plane are designed to make it looked curved when you look out them. They always have an answer no matter how ridiculous.

Ask him, to what end. Ask, if the earth is flat, and there is nothing we can do, and it benefits us in no way to continue the ruse that it is indeed round, then what is the purpose of all this effort being expended to continue the lie? What logic does he honestly hold, beyond some nefarious and dastardly scenario where... x happens, y is the result, and z would be the inevitable horrible outcome.

Surely, for this to make sense to them, there has to be a valid reason beyond "Just because." just because, well.. because.

A colour blind person will tell you that blue is just a shade of grey, and nothing you can say will convince them of just how blue appears. But these people have a defect of the eye... what defect does a flat earther have, really...

All flat earthers will be called 2-D cardboard cookie cutters. I'm so done with it.

That is offensive to true flatlanders.

They already don't have a digestive tract, why are you taking away their brains too?

Flat earth is a ruse to discredit conspiracy theorists as whack jobs and it's doing a damn fine job of it.

I noticed that the other day too.

Usually when I see the words "Conspiracy theorist" I get a twinge, because ultimately, I am one, so it is generally something I have read or looked into. UFO's, Bigfoot, ghosts in the toilet bowl, etc.. I can usually just glibly scroll on.

But they called this roger ramjet wannabe, a "Conspiracy theorist" and I felt a twinge of offense. If they start doing that more, I'm going to have to consider myself a Conspiracy tourist.

Yes it annoys me too, I'm a conspiracy theorist simply for questioning the narrative.

It's like we are being put into nice little boxes, conspirary theorist = nutjob, skeptic = someone that questions conspiracies. It's all too convenient.

From the handful of times I've had the patience to talk with him about the topic (we've agreed to not talk about it most of the time in order to preserve our friendship 'cause I still really care about the guy but I have zero patience for the flat earth sh-stuff) he thinks it is some kind of method to control the people and to keep them away from a higher power. He's not Christian but deeply spiritual and so he thinks it is a way of separating us from that spirituality.

For me this is as close as I get to spirituality and I'm sad that he is missing out on this beauty:

I'm no flat earther but with such highly informed group of people as many of you present yourselves to be I'm surprised you haven't seen the videos where they actually do this.

oh well... I guess everyone is so full of themselves they forgot to actually do any research

No I'm not linking it I actually do research and not sit back in some ivory tower making fun of others I have my own ideas to pursue no time to talk down to other people

Question for the Flat Earth believers.

With the invention of go pro cameras and balloons why dont they attach a go pro camera to a balloon and launch the sucker into orbit?

Granted there are many videos of people already doing this and thus far the images it returned show the earth as a sphere and not flat.

Discuss.

I've watched loads of the videos, loads...
Doesn't mean i believe them.

I added a comment to a recent thread asking for it to be explained to me.

I asked because it's easier to explain to people and show them the posts here.

I've been in planes and have seen the curvature of the Earth with my own eyes. I don't need Youtube videos to show me something that I already know.

The earth can't be flat - because it's hollow and filled with Reptiloidians who shapeshift.

Jeez guys

These people? TGESE PEOPLE? As one of "these people" I ask you Sir, are you some kind of Colour Vision Supremacist? Ha ha ha, I jest and you make a very good point.

I confess I've been pulled in by such things as 2012 Mayan End of the World, Hollow Earth and a few others (I wouldn't say I believed but I could certainly see possibilities) but Flat Earth is never something I could even begin to see the reasons for so many believing.

I've seen the curvature of the earth from the top of a mountain, I don't see how that can be faked...

After weighing up the plethora of convincing evidence from flat-Earthers and round-Earthers alike, the answer is obvious.

The Earth Is A Semi-sphere. Flat-Earthers live on the flat side and the rest of us live on the round side.

I always find it interesting to listen to the arguments. I do not always have the time to consider each one of them. And I must confess, that some arguments are harder to diffuse than others. So, the coming week I will be looking into some flat earth mumbo argument: foto's that show full skylines in a distance which would be impossible given distance and curvature.

Or planes flying straight. I mean, some of the potential answers are fascinating. And perhaps, that is exactly how we should treat people believing in such ideas, like 3 or 4 year old who can barrage you with the why question. Ever had the experience? hahaha.

Attending school growing up should give a pretty good foundation that the earth isn't flat.
