The soldier crossed to the South Korean side of the Joint Security Area (JSA) in the village of Panmunjom on Monday. He had driven near the JSA, but had to finish his journey by foot when a wheel came loose, the South said. North Korean troops shot at him 40 times - but he made it across and was found under a pile of leaves, it added. About 1,000 people from the North flee to the South each year - but very few defect via the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), which is one of the world's most heavily guarded strips of land. It is even more unusual for North Koreans to cross at the JSA, which is a tourist attraction, and the only portion of the DMZ where both forces stand face-to-face. North and South Korea are technically still at war, since the conflict between them ended in 1953 with a truce and not a formal peace treaty.

Hope he manages to make a full recovery.

No return fire?

How did he actually make it across and then 'hide' ?

Found under a pile of leaves...I think they 'leaved' something out.

He was shot 5 times while running across the border. He is in an induced coma and life support. The reports I've seen say he had the worst case of intestinal parasites they've ever seen.

Surgeons also found a never before seen parasite in his body, along with an 8 inch roundworm that was removed from him. He was very brave to make his escape. I hope he survives. He can be a useful intelligence source.

The NK people must be suffering so much. Parasites..ugh

Seeing as how this guy is a real, actual refugee from tyranny trying to escape at a n accepted risk to life, lets hear him out.

Yes I hope he is well too, though I dont have to know anyone to hope for the best of health.

This isnt the same as economic immigrants flooding boarders from stone age cultures, this guy is really trying to get out regardless if he dies or not.

They have the video of the incident. They are debating how much to release. SK officials said it looked like an action movie.

No, but he is a human being.

Just because he's from North Korea doesn't mean his life is worthless, you know?

Aid him..
But still, it could be a setup to send a spy, getting shot could be part of the show.

Wow, that's the kind of thing that could have kick-started WW3. North Korean soldier crossing the DMZ into South Korea, North Korea shooting across DMZ at him, South Korea returning fire... The NK/SK DMZ is the last place to mess around.

I dont think 11 inch parasitic worms and 5 gun shot wounds is just "part of the show". He gambled with what was left of his life to run for it, do or die at that moment, he won, and i hope he lives to tell his tale to us all.

He will probably get a face full of weaponized nerve agent the minute he steps out of a hospital.

They released the video

Also, it seems like Dear Leader is responsible for North Korea's severe parasite problem.

So if the soldiers are suffering and stealing food from civilians, i cant even begin to imagine how the civilians are suffering.

Fat Kim needs assassinating, poison his food or drink i say, he obviously eats a lot.

Then, slowly, a regime change, all countries who want to help, do so, then help the North Korean people and set up a democratic society and let them get on with their lives.

Easier said than done, but something must be done.

Actually, from what I've heard, civilians tend to be better off since they have access to more food on the black market.

Also, they just posted some images of some of the parasites. And damn, those things are huge!
