Police in Jacksonville say Charlaya Moore, 23 years old, attempted to set off an explosive device during a traffic stop.

Charlaya Moore, 23, was being held in the Duval County jail on charges of possession of a destructive device, aggravated assault on police and resisting police with violence.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said Moore was pulled over at around 11:15 p.m. in the Grove Park area of the city. They said Moore refused multiple requests to get out of the car and began reaching under her seat. As one of the officers tried to pull Moore out of the car, she produced out the explosive device and attempted to ignite it. Another police officer got in the passenger's side of the vehicle and took the device away from Moore.

A search of Moore's vehicle revealed more explosive devices, as well as wigs and glasses for use in disguises. When asked what she was doing in the neighborhood, Moore said she was on her way to her boss' house.

This is scary to see what depths criminals will go to in order to acquire various types of deadly weapons. Instances where people try to use these weapons against our sworn Law Enforcement professions are even more sobering, because these individuals are on the front lines every single day.

It is hard to tell what kind of chaos she had planned, but with disguises and explosive devices (likely pipe bombs, based on description) it doesn't look good.

Best wishes to the brave deputies in Jacksonville, and around the nation as they go about their jobs. You are all in my prayers tonight. Stay safe, thin blue line.

Authorities did not detail the type of explosives recovered from the vehicle, but said the bomb squad collected them.

I'm going to go with fireworks as the explosive devices.

Probably the "explosive device" were just firecrackers the way leo's embellish, but damn people getting cray cray out there.

According to Al Gore it will be by 2010. That's probably gonna be a bad year for Florida.

The one I laugh at usually is when they find "bomb-making materials". Almost everyone here has "materials" and doesn't know it. It doesn't mean anything without a lot more details.

**On second thought it seems while reading through the replies I confused what the title stated rather than the article, should have re-read directly before reply. Apologies.** edit

As Vector suggests people do tend to exaggerate, so who knows without further info.

True, but that is only one element of constructive intent. Otherwise, everyone with household chemical A and B under their sink would be felons. In her instance, assembling them into something she was even capable of igniting satisfies that (based on her actual charge). Possessing assembled devices is also illegal.

I think the other charges speak for themselves though:

aggravated assault on police and resisting police with violence.

She clearly had something against police, and was prepared to act against them (or anyone else unlucky to cross paths with her) using explosive devices. This is no different than her using a firearm or knife to attack the officers.

That is certainly possible, but it would be impossible to tell the difference right away.

Makes you wonder how many people we pass every day, have a pipe bomb under the seat, or on their person.

Oh, this lady was whackadoo. Not trying to take that away from her. I mean she had something explosive and lit it in a dispute with LEO. That's crazy, even if it was just a firecracker, what in the world are you thinking?

I just mean when the news says, "police say they found bomb-making materials at the house" without offering any details (was there any evidence of success or intention of bomb-making?), I generally just think it's news-making material.

Yeah it does, probably quite a few along with improvised incendiary devices. There are just so many different ways they individuals can carry out their violent criminal acts.

The law, of course, recognizes explosives and incendiaries as deadly weapons. She is lucky the officers didn't feel threatened enough to use deadly force. Which is a huge compliment to them. They were able to apprehend her without firing a shot.

Well done Jacksonville Sheriff's Office

Oh yeah buddy, no doubt there at all! That is kind of my thoughts on it too, even if it is a firecracker how can she expect them to not defend themselves? I would say she is lucky, but it is probably a combination of that and exceptional training on their part in rushing in to secure her and the weapons when her ignition attempt failed. Just unimaginable though, you would have to be prepared to die when you got to that point. I wonder what was up with the disguises and wigs? Just has very strange feel to it.

Yeah you are right, for sure the MSM/news likes to overplay the imagery associated with the terminology. A box of matches and a bottle of Wild Turkey and the news will say its "bomb making" material

From reading this forum, you get the impression that 90% of the people in this country are either depressed, on drugs, or desiring to murder someone one day.

Do you think that 90% of Americans fall into one or more of those 3 catagories?

It is certainly possible, although I don't have any conclusive evidence to suggest that. I think a lot of the problem is the media coverage these types of events get, which glorifies such behavior. Of course that is no excuse, individuals are responsible for their own actions.

These are crazy times though. People frequently do ridiculous things

Strangely enough, the FBI and Homeland Security are most concerned about Shoulder-Fired missiles. I don't think you can keep one of those under your seat, or your coat though...can you?

She was probably vigorously tearing up aluminum foil and adding it to a plastic bottle with a bit of Drano in it.

Can't make much of this story with the few details given thus far.

This is Florida. They were probably fireworks and the cops charged her with explosive devices after they tazed the crap out of her.
