Sackler Family Makes $14 Billion From OxyContin

$14 Billion off of one opioid, and that's not even in a black market! The Mexican Cartels probably bring in more cash off the books but are bound by the limitations of using a black market vs a private bank.

So if you've ever wondered who was getting rich off the death & addiction of millions of Americans using pain pills, as in who owns Perdue Pharma, wonder no longer... They have one name.

SACKLER

The bulk of the Sacklers’ fortune has been accumulated only in recent decades, yet the source of their wealth is to most people as obscure as that of the robber barons. While the Sacklers are interviewed regularly on the subject of their generosity, they almost never speak publicly about the family business, Purdue Pharma—a privately held company, based in Stamford, Connecticut, that developed the prescription painkiller OxyContin. Upon its release, in 1995, OxyContin was hailed as a medical breakthrough, a long-lasting narcotic that could help patients suffering from moderate to severe pain. The drug became a blockbuster, and has reportedly generated some thirty-five billion dollars in revenue for Purdue.

The revelations from the former DEA official, mainly his qualified opinion that the Pain Clinic racket made the whole crack epidemic of the 1980s look like child's play, was certainly implicative. He implied that the legitimacy of medicine provided a thin veil that which enabled drug dealers in white lab coats the freedom to work legally and under very little regulation.

The Insuring Patient Access and Effective Drug Enforcement Act (2016) signed by President Obama made it nearly impossible for the DEA to intervene in cases where large (suspicious) shipments of opioids are delivered to pharmacies bound for the black market. The drug industry lobbied heavily to pass the bill, contributing up to $1.5 million to its 23 congressional cosponsors.

Pharmaceutical Lobby? You mean the legal cartels?

Yes, these drug companies are legal cartels as you say, but these idiots who chose to abuse the drugs ruin it for people who genuinely need pain relief. Being in pain day in and day out from a chronic condition is barbaric. These idiots who chose to get high, let them, it's their own fault.

My mother has multiple sclerosis. Her pain is off the charts, DAILY...literally day in and day out. There is no escape, even with her pain medication. Ontop of her Ms, she has plates and screws holding her neck up, spina bifida, tailbone issues, the list goes on. My mother takes so much medication, and NOT ALL of it is pain meds, but she is so scared of being in pain with all the cutbacks that she has thought of suicide because she would rather not be in pain everyday, not because she wants to get high. It terrifies me to think of my mother having to be in pain, it's absolutely inhumane! This war on prescription medication is pointless!

People want to get high, they are gonna get high, just like alcohol back in the day, etc....prohibition doesn't work. Yes it's greedy that the industry gets to make these insane amounts of money, but people will do what they wanna do. But it's really not fair to ruin it for the people who genuinely need help. My grandpa, WWII veteran was in tears begging for more morphine and dilauded (sp?) When he was dying from pancreatic and liver cancer, we couldn't even give him enough to be comfortable, heartwrenching.

Well I don't disagree with that at all. I do think I should mention that the heroin/fentynol wave that's sweeping suburban America today is being fed by the Mexican cartels - who are filling the void that prescription opioids (Perdue) left in its wake. Once the FED cracked down on the pain clinics, the dirty doctors, the overprescribing or even blind scripts for people with no pain what so ever, there was a certain % of the population that still needed to get high. Enter the Mexican cartels, who now manufacture and distribute (quite lawlessly in fact) heroin and fentynol.

The cartels aren't the biggest problem regarding Fentanyl. In fact, most heroine coming from down south is "clean" per se.

The problem arises, and like you mentioned in many suburban areas because there are so many people now selling H that each town has multiple small to moderate dealers. Kingpin dealers are a thing of the past for the most part. These guys, in an attempt to strengthen their product will order on the deep Web (usually from china) Fentanyl, which is made in hundreds of underground labs across the globe. And it's cheap... dirt freaking cheap...

They then try to mix it themselves, playing wannabe lab techs and feeling like they are making the best product out there.

Then, they get arrested after 18 people overdose in one night and the trail leads back to them.

This isn't stopping anytime soon. I just hope our government will one day soon realize the failed drug war, and bite the bullet that is treating addicts with what they want in a safe environment.

Please let it be soon. I'm really sick of burying my friends...

Utterly false and debunked by NatGeo in 2013.

Almost all heroin coming into the USA from Mexico is mixed with fentynol. Almost all is more than most. The cartels order cheap precursor ingredients for fentynol from China, then proceed to cook it up in their own labs in Mexico.

You’ll find pure heroin in Miami because it’s a port city that isn’t controlled by Mexico but rather the Cuban & South American cartels who aren’t manufacturing fentynol and who only make up a minuscule % of the black market.

This has already appeared on ATS. Keep repeating something does not make it any less of a lie.

The person to blame for all addictions is YOU! Nobody has a gun against your head forcing you to take this stuff. If you really are that stupid that you let yourself be sabotaged by drugs to this level then there was never any hope for you any way. If it is not heroin it would be liquor.

Horrid little humans always go looking to blame others for their own inadequacies and weaknesses. This thread is trash.

I hate to be that guy but my thread has the video. You know, pics or it didn’t happen, right?

Seriously though, the video is almost 30 min long and the investigative reporter lays out one concise and well sourced story of the Sackler family and their many exploits involving the pharma industry.

Must be nice, have the US tax payer private army to protect your opium fields, then charge them to be killed off by the drugs you manufacture and destroy their society.

I really don't understand this. They made a drug, agreed it was addictive. Being a business, they also saw a need to provide it to those in pain, and the FDA agreed.

It isn't their fault people abuse it. Used correctly, Oxys can save people from agonizing pain and suffering.

No, it doesn't.

People need to take responsibility for their own actions. No one forces anyone to illegally abuse painkillers.

No youre post is trash!!! When you are given/prescribed something that is marketed as and you are told it is non addictive than its not your fault that it is very addictive. You know nothing!

On one hand I want to thank them for keeping my father in love pain free in his last days, and on the other hand I want to scream at them for their product which led many of my friends down the path to heroin and later their coffins.

Though part of me feels like if it wasn't OC it would have been something else.

I don't think the drug is inherently bad just because it's addictive. Until someone comes out with a better solution for those in pain.

No worries, because you are that guy. You know, the thread that I linked that has the article and vid and links...yeah, it’s all in there. It’s all good, taking a swipe at genuine ‘heads up’ reply is a nice look, over and above your laziness.

Don’t bother replying, your time would be better spent reading the original thread...ya know, with pics and video.

I'm sorry, who was FORCED to illegally abuse them?

They offered a product, it's not their fault others illegally abuse it. And do you seriously believe people believe they are non -adictive ?

Dear god you are naive.
