Government education conspiracy

I would simply like to know if anyone else finds it disturbing the the U.S. federal government has so much control over our educational system via the Department of Education?

Originally virtually all education in the U.S. was private. Eventually states began to fund education with state tax dollars....ok, no problem. The tenth amendment gives them the right to do so. However, soon the federal government began funding education. Now education is virtually controlled by the federal government via mandates, etc...
