I won't have that problem in My family because My child goes to public school and gets to see racism in action all throughout the day. The best part is She has been bullied and assaulted by the perpetual victims multiple times which will teach Her a life long lesson.

OP I don't think you are racist. I say that because you don't wish these people any harm, nor do you hate them. That would be racism.
Feeling more comfortable around your own is something I can totally understand.
People from other cultures are different. We have some kind of 'script' when we meet people of our own culture. Banter is easy and we all know what it all means. We know what the other one is expecting and what is acceptable to say back.

I have sometimes had difficulties conversing with people of other cultures, even down to facial expressions and body language. Cracking a normal joke is suddenly not working.

This has nothing to do with race FFS. It is cultural and has everything to do with knowing what to expect and what to give out. Sometimes it is absolutely as if two aliens meet. yes, they use the same words but nothing else is synchronised. This makes for very awkward communication, for both sides.

Those that say we have to feel comfortable with everything and not miss old fashioned stuff are just very un-understanding people who believe that you must fit a square into a round hole, even if you use a hammer or else you are a:.................... fill in insult of choice.

You are the real problem by ignoring a very real human problem. Communication is very important for getting along. Some are doing great whilst others have no intention of learning the ways of their new home. For some people [for very good reasons, I am one of them] it is vital that we can communicate within our known and trusted structure, everything else can makes us feel so awkward that we prefer to seek out places with people of our own culture. Just as OP did.

There is nothing wrong with that. In these times of having to accept everything and everybody, whilst having no rights to our own culture, we need something we feel comfortable with or we'd feel like proverbial leaves in the wind with nothing familiar left.

You go to whichever convenience stores that you want to, for whatever reason you wish. Your daughter can patronize whichever stores that she wishes.
Here is the unsolicited advice that I will give to you.... Give a store that has new management a chance, no matter what skin color, sex, sexual orientation, religion....etc, that they are.
I have found, more often than not, where I live in the US, Pennsylvania... that Indian and Pakistani managed stores have staff that tend to be rude and the prices run on the high side. It is something that I have noticed. Does it make me a racist? Some would say yes, but I visit the businesses that I do because of their prices and the service... not because of who they are.
BUT... It is not the case every time. The is a convenience store near me that is owned and managed by an Indian man and every one of the people that work there (mostly his family... but not all of them) are kind and friendly. The prices are lower there than the prices at other convenience stores in the area... They get my business.

Well let's see,
Every Chinese restaurant in my town,"We have three" has Asian employees. That's cool.
All the cars parked out back are Japanese.
Are they racist for not driving cars not made by Asians?

I'm confused, are you saying Japan is not an Asian country?

The vast majority of people are to some degree racist, always find it amusing that some folks will cast judgment on others while having some segment of their lives where they have a preference to one particular demographic.

It is called human nature, but for the OP naw more an older guy that is irritated by change least thats my nickles worth.

Ah, gotcha.

Well, in some cases those 'Asian' cars are made right here in Murica. So, maybe?

It's 100% not racist to want to buy gas from someone who speaks the same language as you.

Racism is believing one race is superior or better than another race. Or believing a certain race(s) other than your own is sub-human.

Unless you believe that then you aren't racist, despite what Democrats or your daughter tell you.

sounds like canada is starting to catch up with the U.S.. in my neighbor hood which is a big neighbor hood land area wise, talking like about like a five mile square area. is and has been fast filling up with people when there was nothing but woods and farm land for 48 plus years that's how long my family has lived in the area. before that old timers say it was mostly pig trails. with a couple of big a@@ farms. it's next to the interstate and they say it went to hell when they built the interstate through here. we have four convenience/ gas stores inside this area. two are corporate owned, two are independent branded stores. three of them are within 1/4 mile of the interstate entrance/ exit.

of these stores. two were bought by people from i'm gonna say from india, one i know for sure they are, the other it's hard to tell because they don't talk that much and when they do it's broken english, i sometimes wonder if that is just a put on to avoid having to deal with customers. this one right from the get go, started going sky high with gas prices. i'm talking the are any where from .20 cents to .50 cents more i gallon then the others, quit going into that one long time ago so i can't tell you what prices are like on other stuff. never went to the corparte stores that much but everyone knows them and what kind of prices they have.

of these four one was a little mom and pop type place but they carried everything and were priced fairly reasonable, and is one within 1/4 mile of the interstate. most of the people in the area went to this store. but they got old and the kids and grand kids had no interest in taking over sold they sold it, and the first people that bought it were from india. they didn't manage to stay open long, before the state shut them down for almost a year for rigged pumps and failure to pay sales taxes is my understanding.

the store reopened, but this time the way i understand it the first new owners sold it to other family members, some say that is just a tax scheme and legal deal to keep it in the family, i can't say.

started to going back to the store, the new owners were real nice and ran things pretty good at first. but as time went on i started noticing that they were putting in absolutely worthless useless sh@@, and the store started looking like the market streets you see on tv, you know where all the vendors are hockin useless junk and boxes and boxes of little the candy you see in candy bowls at some offices, next to the regiaster. as time went on they have started going up on prices, before i quit going there, they averaged about 15 cents to a buck higher on items that i bought than all the other stores.

but what really put a stop to my patronage, was one day i was at the cash register, and they new owner said here i don't have the correct silver in change, take some of this candy to make up for the difference. he told me that in india that's the way they do it if they don't have the correct change, it had value so if they are say a dime short, they give you a dimes worth of candy.

now you know it's no big deal but what if they are a dime, nickel, three, four cent short all the time? i now go to the Tom Thumb, they suck but at least they are honest on how they rip you off.

Having a preference on whom you conduct business with in and of itself is not racist. If you choose a gas station run by white people over a gas station run by middle eastern people - that is your choice and yours alone. You don't owe anyone an explanation or an apology. Now if you drive by shouting racial epithets and throwing rocks, that may be a different story.

Democrat talking heads tell me I'm racist everyday. I'm racist for being white. I'm racist because white people in the USA owned slaves hundreds of years ago. I'm racist because I didn't vote for Obama.

The list is literally a million items long.

I guess you could come at it from having a cultural preference . Given the choice between 3 gas bars one white one eastern or one Native American I will pick the Native American one . Not that I gamble but if I did I would choose to in a Native Casino ...its about the culture .

Yup. You're racist alright. You might not be able to kick it, but it sounds as if it makes you uncomfortable. That's good. It's also good that your daughter recognises prejudice as an evil. That creates hope for the next generation.

Meanwhile, ignore that nasty little voice inside of you and try to engage with these folks. They pretty much want the same from life as you do. And don't forget...people said the same about Jews, Irish, Italians..you name it.

Naturally, people prefer to mingle with people that look like them, it's how we're born and it's not just a human instinct. Go into the wild or watch the Discovery/National Geographic channel and see how many lions are chilling with the tigers, etc... Personally, I don't mind people from India, I think they make the best doctors and chose an Indian woman for my child's Pediatrician and she's beyond amazing. Indians and Asians are extremely smart and they have no problem assimilating to American culture or keeping theirs limited to their personal life and I can respect that.

Having said that, it doesn't make you a racist just because you pass their stores to find one owned by a white guy that understands your lingo. Congratulations on being normal
