Agree wth others, some kind of mooring for a mast that fit into the center opening. A tie off, tide gauge, guy wire.

If there is another one some distance away, then it was mooring for a ship.

They should leave it there for future archeologists to puzzle over. Maybe carve some hieroglyphs on it (giggity).

i mages

I think i am going to do that , make some completely random nonsensical object and bury it for future archaeologists to ponder about. It would be great to be able to time travel and see what BS they come up with to explain it.

There are those kind of monuments...

One in Texas

When Bobs Big Boy (burgers) went out of business, all the statues out front of the stores went up for auction. A friend of mine suggested we should bid on them, line them up on the skyline ridge, overlooking the Pacific ocean, all facing the sea.

We passed.

One day they'll find golden arches every where, think its a world wide religion where people visited the temples, and sacrificed cows to priests dressed as clowns.

Other articles state it is 60-70 yards away from a lighthouse and the legs are capped in concrete. I am thinking definitely a home made mooring

Or a flagpole..that makes sense since the hole is meant for something to go into it just like a Mic stand, and it's not so big either, and is meant to assemble and disassemble....with fecking nuts and bolts.

If you ever wanted to visit Rhode Island, do it quickly before they open the vault and unleash the Eldritch abomination imprisoned within.

Looks like some kind of underwater "tripod" for something. The large opening in the middle looks like where you'd attach a giant pole -- to hold it in place. Pretty industrial-looking piece.

The write up says it can't be removed by hand so it is covered pretty good with sand. It says they will attempt to remove it tomorrow using an excavator at low tide

I did an image search and the closest thing I came up with "mud pads for docks" or "hold downs". A concrete cylindrical weight with a metal plate and cylinder welded togther along with webbing.

It would hold down a floating dock or pier:

That's either a really big thumb or a very small oddity.

Will be interesting to see what it is though.

I wonder why 'they' are thinking it's going to need some big equipment to get out of there?

We'll see!

Only thing keeping me from agreeing with you is no one remembers it being put there not the harbor master nor anyone and i don't think they would put something that metallic that could hurt aomeone badly within feet of shore on a public beach

ROFLMAO. You are an ass have you read anything about this . This thing is buried so deep they could not move it with a loader or winch.
