Maybe you misconstrued oil for Methane? The ice sheets melting can release a lot of methane in a rapid amount of time.
If in five years the ice melts at an accelerated rate, it's possible the overall temperature of the planet rises...maybe a half a degree or more...and
that's a lot.
I've always thought that oil is sort of a suspension mechanism for the planet. Oil deadens resonate features of the plates. Once we hit the wrong
plate, earthquakes are triggered. It's no secret that oil extraction has caused earthquakes.
The cause and effect is there, but it hasn't been well studied.
