“As Americans, we all owe a debt of gratitude to the crew for their courage, persistence and sacrifice in the face of horrendous circumstances. While our search for the rest of the wreckage will continue, I hope everyone connected to this historic ship will feel some measure of closure at this discovery so long in coming,” Allen said.

PHILIPPINE SEA – After 72 years, the USS Indianapolis has finally been found.

Led by a search team put together by billionaire Paul Allen, the ship was found resting at the bottom on the Philippine Sea.

Lost USS Indianapolis found Saturday in the Philippine Sea

After all of these years she is finally found. Maybe the 19 survivors left can have a little closure.

Considered to be the greatest generation, this story us one of the many reasons why.

Thank you to all that have served past and present.

Most people probably only know the Indianapolis from watching the movie Jaws.
The tattoo on Quint and story he tells while drinking.
It was the ship carrying the atomic bomb which was so secret no one knew to look for it after it was sunk by a Japanese submarine.
HUndreds of me were eaten by sharks while waiting for days to be rescued.
Horribly tragic story.

I agree, I also watched the USS Indianapolis with Nicholas Cage and I thought the movie was pretty horrible. I thought that the movie could have been much better.

A little piece of history that everyone should take a look at.

Never mind had to edit. Read the article after posting. Silly me. It carried the components. Sounds like they got delivered before the ship sank.

Is the water cold enough there to keep things pretty preserved?

may the families and the survivors finally find peace, and may the dead be at peace knowing they have been found and not forgotten.

I skimmed through the book, once. Honestly, that's all I could take. That was one of the most heart breaking stories of WWII, and then to court martial the captain afterwards...I'm glad he was finally exonerated.

Least she's been found and recorded and thus those who did pay the price and their family members can have somewhere to pay their respects.

I do hope the wreckhunters don't find that ship it deserves its peace.
Thinking about it, all ships deserve peace.

I made the mistake of watching that POS movie and forgotten about until your reminder.
Damn you Nicholas Cage!

A horrible thing, totally unnecessary, and an unimaginable tragedy for the families of those brave men. And just to think,
they met such a terrible end only for the purpose of delivering the most evil device ever used in warfare, and it was indeed used to end tens of thousands of other lives in a matter of seconds.

It's already been mentioned, but it bears posting... one of my favorite scenes in all of film.

My great grandfather was on that ship. He died when I was a junior in high school. He told me some very #ed up story's about it, lost a lot of friends right in front of his eyes. We lived on an island, and he wouldn't go anywhere near the ocean, it's the only thing I ever knew him to be afraid of. It makes me happy they found it, even though he's long since passed.
