Australia police 'foil terror plot to bring down plane'

Counter-terrorism police in Australia have stopped a suspected plot to bring down an aeroplane, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has said. He was speaking after four people were arrested in raids across Sydney. Investigators said they had information that the plot to blow up an aircraft involved the use of an "improvised device". Mr Turnbull said the raids had been a "major joint counter-terrorism operation". He said extra security was in place at domestic and international airports. The raids took place in the Sydney suburbs of Surry Hills, Lakemba, Wiley Park and Punchbowl, Australian broadcaster ABC reported. Australia's national terror threat level remains at "probable".

Security at all major airports across Australia has increased after police foiled a plot to "bring down" a plane in a terrorist attack. Four men were taken into custody last night when heavily armed counter-terrorism officers raided four Sydney properties over the alleged plot. Mr Turnbull said increased security measures have been placed on all Australian airports, although the terror threat level remains the same at probable. "I can report last night that there has been a major joint counter-terrorism operation to disrupt a terrorist plot to bring down an airplane," the Australian leader told reporters The additional security has been put in place at domestic and international terminals. Mr Turnbull is advising travellers to arrive at the airport two hours before their flight.

Not many details on this story yet, I winder if any local ATS members their in OZ might have a closer perspective or personal take on this recent event. Seems this is the first I have seen of this type of planned bombing in OZ. Welcome to the club, unfortunately. And kudo's to your police force for foiling the plot!

This is about the Philippines but there were warning signs from some of the captured documents of the grand plan to cause mayhem in many parts of Asia to include Australia.

MANADO, Indonesia – A six-nation summit co-hosted by Indonesia and Australia has agreed to set up a forum to strengthen cooperation between intelligence services to counter extremist threats. Security ministers and officials from Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines and New Zealand held a one-day meeting on Saturday in Manado, the capital of Indonesia's North Sulawesi province, focusing on the Islamic State group attack on the southern Philippine city of Marawi. Indonesia's top security minister, Wiranto, told a news conference that the six countries agreed to establish the Foreign Terrorist Fighters Forum to strengthen information sharing and cooperation between law enforcement and intelligence services.

Lakemba and Punchbowl are two Muslim majority neighborhoods so I'll let people draw their own conclusion.

But I will say that THIS is why increasingly here in the West we can't have nice things.....

The Counter-terrorism squad in Australia seem to be much more adept at catching these guys than the US or Britain.

That is because the task is a lot easier in oz. They set their info up very well from the start and its not an easy place to slip in too. Lots of places, but see above for the gigantic muslim enclaves I mentioned which you don't believe exist. DO some research and ask questions where you find gaps and you can draw your own conclusion but I've been there.
