Soon after Imran Awan joined the staff of Florida Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz in 2005, his brothers Abid and Jamal, his wife Hina, and his brother’s wife Natalia all appeared on other members’ payrolls, supposedly as IT administrators. His best friend Rao Abbas landed on the payroll too. Most of them made salaries ordinarily only chiefs of staff earn, but they were rarely seen or heard from in Hill IT circles.
...
Deutch, meanwhile, had Natalia — who is from Ukraine, while the others are Pakistani — as his IT person in 2011.
Awan's attorney, Chris Gowen, said his client is the victim of a right-wing media conspiracy.
"This is clearly a right-wing media-driven prosecution by a United States Attorney's Office that wants to prosecute people for working while Muslim," Gowen said. "A quick glance at what the government filed in court today confirms the lack of evidence or proof they have against my client."
Imran boasted unusual clout among House Democrats, and was even pictured conversing with former President Bill Clinton.
After Rao Abbas, who was owed money by the dealership, threatened to sue amid allegations of deception and theft, Abbas appeared on the congressional payroll and received $250,000 in taxpayer payments.

Rao R Abbas Information Technology, Rep. Theodore Deutch (D-FL21)
Rao R Abbas, a current staffer, earned an estimated salary of $93,151 USD as an Information Technology through the most recent House pay period. This was close to the median for a House IT administrator.
Abbas has been employed in Congress since Q4 '12, and has also been a staffer for Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO5), Rep. John Sarbanes (D-MD3), Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-NY14), and Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-PA8).

Despite numerous family members making $160,000 congressional salaries, debts went unpaid by the brothers, including to the Congressional Federal Credit Union.

So many of the Dems had foreign nationals (and apparently their spouses) working as their IT staff, but they were never seen other than as names on a payroll report.
In addition to his other jobs, Imran is a real estate agent, and Khattak is also a realtor who obtained the cash from Al-Attar and passed it through bank accounts used for real estate deals in Fairfax County, Va.

The attorney for a prominent Democratic congressional employee at the center of a major criminal investigation has deep ties to the Clinton machine in Washington.
Attorney Chris Gowen is serving as the lawyer for Imran Awan, a Pakistani-American IT professional who was apprehended at Dulles Airport this week as he reportedly attempted to leave the country for Pakistan.
Gowen’s past includes several stints in the Clinton machine’s orbit. He began his legal life as a public defender but left that job for the Bill Clinton White House. At the time, he also worked for then-Senator Hillary Clinton. Years later, he jumped on board Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign, directing advance operations there, according to his biography from his law firm, Gowen Rhoades Winograd & Silva, PLLC. In another bio page, Gowen states he has consulted with former Democratic presidential contenders John Kerry and John Edwards.
