I read things like this and I can't figure out which annoys me more...

...How it is people think the authorities taking more tax is a good thing, and never realizing that it is absolutely NEVER used for it's intended purpose.

...Or the whiney juvenile ass tone I have always gotten a sense of from lazy ass drivers, like, "Why don't those bikes have to register and insure, like I do?"...

Go ahead, keep surrendering what is left of what little "rights" you have left.

...Dullards...

Stop asking for "special" consideration and expense and I'll stop asking for it to be taxed and regulated.

Simple as that!

You want a free ride then take it as it is.

Just think what a bitch it would be for those insurance companies and states if all you lazy ass cage monkeys got off your fat asses and rode a bike enough to get healthy enough not to need your cages to drive around anymore, and grew more brain cells and realized that you could save a bunch of bucks by not bothering to register or insure it too.

The only thing that keeps this economy afloat is stupid mother#ers.

No, not pedestrians, just cyclists. Liability insurance is very much a form of personal responsibility. It ensures that you will cover restitution to others for damages caused by your negligence. If a state requires auto, motorcycle, and boat insurance, then cycles and for that matter skateboards should have the same mandates. Both cause as many accidents as not.

What "special considerations & expenses" am I asking for? You seem to be under the misguided impression I own a bicycle (I do not) I am a pedestrian, however. Are you going to advocate a Foot Usage Tax in lieu of a bike tax now?

The common denominator regarding whether you have to register or pay insurance is if you have the gumption to turn the crank yourselves with your own legs, body, sweat, effort...or are just another lazy cage monkey burning gas, sitting on their ass and getting fat, whining about what a bitch traffic is while you ARE the traffic jam yourselves.

I actually had a conversation with somebody stuck in a traffic jam in the past while I was on a bike about precisely that.

Of course he wanted to literally fight about it, threatened to run me down, told me to leave or he was going to get his gun...

I laughed at the retard and rode on and got hollered at by several other grid-locked assholes who wanted to blame somebody for the predicament they brought upon themselves.

What's a traffic jam? I'm in Alaska, man... usually any backup of traffic here is either caused by some idiot tourist rubber necking on the Seward Highway, or a cyclist that "exercises their right" to ride in the middle of the lane on a narrow and winding road that was not built for cycle traffic.

Duh, on the OP's general subject, only doltish would presume otherwise.

Walk wherever you may, fact ride a bike where you may. Just don't ask for "special" consideration from other taxpayers to do so.

I'm all for it! Most of the "progressive" spandex mafia want government to take from everyone else to support their "green" behavior... About time they start paying their "fare share" of/for the roads they tie up "progress" on. Now if Oregon would go to just a sales tax, just think how not bying what you want, but only what you need. Would/could put that Socialist cesspool on a budget. It'd be good for normal people and the spandex wearing fruitcakes. But now they have to pay for not being conservative. Welcome to the world of forced social justice and fare share. You want to play 40 pound bike vs. 2 ton car? You want your own lane? Everything has a price. I'm actually surprised that it wasn't a new "freedom fee" passed on to motorists in the form of a tire valve stem tax. If that dike signs it it the best thing she's done as governor.

So, I just went through all the posts to date and no one has pointed out the giant flaw in this conversation/bill proposal. I ride bikes. I love riding bikes. I've raced bikes. I ride my bike several times a week infact. With that said however, my family also owns three cars. That's three registration tax bills every year and three vehicles we're paying gas taxes on every time we fill up. (No, we don't own a Prius or any other "green" car.)

So please, someone, enlighten me on how I'm getting over on everyone by riding my bike and not paying ANOTHER misappropriated tax?

What whiners! They want to tax those who drive a car, but not themselves? Hypocrites!! Deal with it. Seems fair to me.

Oregon’s bike tax seems designed to address a familiar straw-man argument: that cyclists use streets without paying for them. Such a belief ignores the fact that all U.S. taxpayers pay for roads, whether or not they own cars—which most cyclists do. Furthermore, bikes’ physical impact on roads is close to nil. Some argue that bikes represent an infrastructure cost savings, in that they take heavy-bearing cars off the road.

*shrug* Property taxes are supposed to help with that as are taxes on the dollar. Paying twice already when it comes from car usage.

Legislators pushing the tax—an idea that’s swirled in Oregon, Washington, and other statehouses for years—“felt that bicycles ought to contribute to the system, bicycle owners ought to contribute to the system, irrespective of the fact that most of them also own a car,” Senator Lee Beyer, who helped write the bill, told Oregon Public Broadcasting in May.

Ouch paying three times to use the roads.

That' not even to mention in come tax. -Oregon 9.9%

How does anyone afford Oregon anymore? LOL

Ah, but that's the catch. The people complaining about this tax didn't seem to mind drivers of cars paying an extra tax. Sales tax and property tax ought to handle such things; I agree. At this point, though, unless they also demand the gas tax is removed, they don't have much of a leg to stand on.

All I see is a bunch of broke a$$ bicyclists and some lazy a$$ drivers. I work and I bicycle. Bring on the $15 for a bike over $200 With wheels over 26". Any children's bike is exempt. It's not an annual tax.... I don't see the problem with the tax at all. I do see a problem with motorists. Ripping into bicyclists not wanting to be taxed more than other people. No one wants to be taxed. S'why we had a damn revolution.

Cyclist here as well. Bring it on, I will gladly pay one time fee of 15 dollars to ignore stop signs when I see both ways clear before I need to break, to drive through a motorists lawn for a shortcut, over your wife's garden veggies and through your narrow alleys and parking lots just to arrive at the same place you work 5 minutes before you do and in better shape than a motorists has seen in their mirror for years.

I'm unilaterally against all new taxes.

However if you can afford a $200 bike and you complain about a measly $15?

Do they not know how much they pay in taxes for everything else? This bike tax is probably the cheapest tax they have.
