Assuming it is a mental disorder.. and I think it is safe to assume it is. Couldn't it be a mental disorder buried so deeply within a persons ID , that no amount of pharmaceuticals nor Jesus can fix it...

Hell we can't even successfully diagnose it, let alone actually cure it...

So what do we do with people who have non-violent mental disorders we can't cure???

Let's think about "mental disorders" for a moment.

Would you say that someone talking to an individual that no one can see is a disorder?

How about participating in weekly ritual cannibalism and blood-drinking?

What about people who believe they can literally cure disease or change the weather by mumbling words?

Yet, we know it as prayer, Holy Communion and belief in miracles.

I'd be content if they'd just stop doing that crap to us.

Here's the thing. Despite all the "common knowledge" of people bleated here and elsewhere every day, I never chose my sexual orientation or my gender identity. So the only "choice" I have is to live authentically or live a lie. Yet, over and over at least three or four times a week, we see threads here promoting the idea that some with a differing gender identity or sexual orientation (that's always right there just beneath the surface too) is insane and should be treated as such.

Yet, if I make totally rational comments pointing out the absolute pathology of most religious beliefs Fundie Christianity particularly, how quickly would I be (rightfully) shouted down as a bigot ... even when, by our standard definitions of "mental disorders" any religion you care to name is basically bonkers.

It feels that way even if people don't mean it. It's like when people asked me if I could drive or read Braille. I always laugh at that but then again it seems that they think less of me. That I am not a "complete" and "normal" person.
If people refuse to learn and understand anything about it, that shows their true colors.
