Could George H.W. Bush Be Deepthroat?

The author of the biography of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein has come out and said he thinks George H.W. Bush, the former President and father of the current President, is the man known as deepthroat, who leaked information to the press that ended in the Watergate scandal that brought down the Nixon administration.

NEW YORK The author of the 1993 biography of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, “Deep Truth,” today named George H.W. Bush the new chief suspect as famed Watergate source Deep Throat.

The “outing” was timed to the opening of the two reporters’ Watergate archives at the University of Texas.

The author of several books for major publishers, Adrian Havill says his claim is based on recent events and his own research at the the National Archives. He announced the “finding” in a letter posted at the Romenesko site at the Poynter Institute.

Wow this is pretty shocking! The Bush family might loose clout within the Republican party if these allegations are true.

I've heard rumors concerning Bush and 'Deepthroat' but not in the context you mention hehe...

LOL I read the title of this post somewhat too quickly, and understood it as something completely different. LOL Let's just say I missed that 'be' part.

He could be, but if it came out I don't think it would hurt them at all. The American cattle would love him all the more for coming clean with the truth and, in the end, being against the 'crook.' Of course they're all crooks, but Joe Public doesn't know that, nor does he care to know.

There are alot, and i mean A LOT of theories and names out there. Rehnquist, Bush, Buchanan, Haig, Fielding etc.

Has to be. As Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel, he was "in" on everything Nixon did strategically blowing huge holes in the Supreme Court so it could be remade as Nixon saw fit. By the time this "nobody" was tapped to fill the fourth slot on the court, the Nixon administration got something they hadn't bargained for... a brilliant man of integrity (eventually).

What other insider was in a better position to blow the whistle than a recent lifetime appointment that had been there from the begginning? Even Nixon had to know who it was. But you can't touch a SCJ once they get confirmation. Nixon had given his own Judas lifetime immunity.

And if it were anyone else, they would have been exposed or even outed themselves once out of public life. Only a SCJ stays in office this long. Yup. It's Rehnquist.

It could have been a dig at the '72~ porno film, but it was probably about something else, and the film just was released later on.

The fun part is that even if someone did post all about who Deepthroat is or was, most people would today just be like, "what's Watergate?", you could probably go around with a t-shirt on that displayed it and nobody would ever notice, but even if anyone did, everyone else would say they are mad and talking about nutso stuff.

( I think the film was '72, it could have been the next couple of years, don't quote me I didn't check the year release before posting this )

Everything happens for a reason. The Bush line wont lose anything over this if Bush 41 ends up being Deep Throat. Nixon's fall was an intra-republican coup intended to save the party from Watergate. The new order of conservatives was installed in the wake of Nixon's problems which Deepthroat caused.

Nixon's fall actually brought part of the Bush/Reagan/Bush crowd into office.

Weinburger: Famous as Reagan's secretary of defense, started as secretary of health, education, and welfare after his predecessor was promoted to replace the resigned Secretary of Defense Mitchell.

Rumsfeld: Our current secretary of defense was doing crap jobs in the Nixon administration, but Ford made him White House Chief of Staff then Secretary of Defense.

G H W Bush: Our president's dad was made director of the CIA by Donald Rumsfeld in 1976.

Robert Bork: Reagan's first choice for a Supreme Court nomination (who was shot down) was the survivor of Nixon's "Saturday Night Massacre" in which he fired two attornies general before the third, Bork, agreed to fire Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox.

If this turns out to be true.......GADS what a spin it puts on the currant political office holders. Looking back from our currant situation to then, it SURE MAKES sense.............
Personally, I think what Nixon was up to was alot more straightforward than what the 'Bushies' have been currantly up to.
I dont give a flip how unpopular that makes me.

Nerdling, do you have a link or something to that statement? If this is recent and true, then I would imagine Rehnquist would be a much better match...George H. W. Bush doesn't have any known health problems AFAIK.

I know that some here may already be aware of this, but in a four-year investigation into identifying "deep throat," the Department of Journalism at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign identified: "Fred Fielding, deputy counsel to former President Richard Nixon."

As to Mr. Fieldings current health status, I cannot find anything thus far on that. Some sources are indicating that it could be Gerald Ford, some are saying that it is indeed GHWB and that he does have a health problem that may lend to the mentioning that the "source" is dying.

Ah well, I guess sooner or later, "deep throat" will be revealed, eventually.

Not sure if it was Fielding or Rehnquist that John Dean "definitively" disproved it wasn't after much near assured speculation DT was identified, but it was one of those.

I'm just leaning Rehnquist now because of his health and Woodward comments (which I've yet to locate from authoritative source).
