No barrel? seems like these cops were just on a mission to get him, doesn't it?

Wasn't a member of a bike club, was he?

It was a 'Nazi' gun, so he has that going against him from the start.
Most of the stories that I see about illegal firearms in Australia tend to connect with bikers.

Its also a classic and without a barrel. Who cares if it was a nazi gun. Its way outdated and the nazi regime has been gone for a long time.

Correct, it is just part of the anti-gun rhetoric, tying the gun to Nazis.

The bolt is quite clearly in place.

From that link:

Please note also that the ATF has guidelines regarding the possession of parts sets and unfinished receivers for tube-style SMG's.

Back in the day, they sold 'parts sets ' for many firearms to convert to full auto (if you had the balls).

Most original rifles like the M16, M14, HK 91, 93, etc., were interchangeable with factory full auto parts, i.e., trigger, auto sear, and selector, for instance.

Owning both the legal semi auto version and a 'parts kit' to convert to full auto amounted to owning a machine gun, a federal offense. And yet it was legal to own and sell the parts kits at gunshows and thru the mail.

I remember, I was there.

Here is a link to a photo of an MP40 barrel for reference.
The part that fits into the weapon behind the barrel nut has the chamber machined into it. If you look for replacement barrels, you will see that they mention that the chamber is machined into the barrel.

From the link:

New 9mm barrel for the German MP34. This is a brand new barrel made from high quality steel and is made to the same dimensions as the original barrels. Fully machined, chambered and in the white. 10 groove right hand twist rifling.

Ya can't be too careful when dealing with the gad dam Nazzzys.
Shoulda used a ball bat and then scalped him after.
Right or wrong , good or bad, don't matter, just dead, that's what counts.

Yes. Possession is the critical part.

No argument there.
But try firing it without the barrel.... my original point.

Firearms collectors drool over historic military arms. Just like watch and coin collectors, the more 'outdated' the more valuable they become.

The point is though, that the barrel can be placed back on the gun with relative ease. A deliberately seized trigger group, bolt, or other part of the mechanism however, would be the only way to call any gun of this sort, properly deactivated, because it would require more than a minute or twos work to return the gun to function.

You can buy a deactivated MP40, Sterling, Sten etc. submachine gun in the USA legally, normally they come with the receiver cut or unusable and people replace with a solid aluminum cylinder for display purposes and yes you can buy a 80% finished receiver in the internet finish it and get yourself a fully automatic weapon, illegal of course

No.
My original point is that the gun is not functional as is, and the line in the article referring to it as being in working order is a lie.

Let's say you hand me that gun and a new barrel. I install the barrel.
Will it fire?
We have no way of knowing until it is tested.

But I know one thing for damn sure.... It will not fire without the barrel.

Hmm, and why was the car pulled over, why searched, why I wonder.
Considering there is yet another amnesty to turn in fire arms here, so we're safer and all that, from gun violence.

"Back soon love, just going to the cop shop to turn in my antique weapon, that has no ability to fire. Keep dinner warm!"

"Oh crap, I'm arrested for what?"

Dastardly illegal firearm owners with unusable guns, the scourge of modern society. But who knows. He may have been going to Mad Barry, the gun expert for his new barrel.

I wonder how one does take an illegal gun to the police or whatever, to turn it in under this amnesty, when they risk being arrested en route?

The BBC article says nought.

Without the barrel his weapon is considered inoperable, not a firearm in the legal sense.

Therefore, confiscation and arrest is unwarranted. I get it though in the New World Order of things, even when kids point their fingers at someone and go bang bang, its cause for alarm.

Not 'anti gun' or anything like that.

Now, stay tuned for more gun men, gun crime and gun violence, after the commercial break.

Hire a lawyer to make the initial approach...

"My client says he found a WWII firearm in his grandfathers things, he would like immunity before turning it in."

Just musing about the rest of your 'dastardly evil gubment sentimen't, they should arrest all people owning vehicles, after all they been used in numerous incidents to kill, surely everyone that owns a car is a potential terrorist.

Without extensive smithing and machining skills that would be suicide, the timing of locking a round in the chamber, firing and eject, then reload is precise.

Weekend warriors need not apply themselves.

Strange the first full year after the gun ban in Oz., gun crime went up 40%, guns are outlawed, only outlaws can have them?

Pay some overly rich professional to turn in my inoperative firearm under a national amnesty?

Seems like a good scheme to make me guilty for gramps keeping a war trophy in his nasty ass closet next his is funky whitey tightys..

Reminds me of an episode of COPS I saw where some misguided woman bought crack from a crack house, called the cops to prove it was a crack house, but who got arrested for possession and purchase of an illegal narcotic. I'll just 3D print a barrel and pew pew sieg heil, thank you very much...

They're not outlawed. They're extremely regulated.

consider it the same if you must, but people here do legally own guns.
