It didn't turn out to be fake news. It was speculated that he might get fired, he hasn't been.

"Speculation" with no basis in evidence or even reality is absolutely Fake News.

For example, if I "speculate" that Barack Obama was born on a garbage scow in Indonesia and then report that without any evidence to suggest it might be true, that's Fake News.
