Right now we have the dire threat of the US killing us all

We have Fukushima

We have North Korea

We have that one group that claims a lot

We have impending doom always, because it sells...

As for the end of the world... I feel it is somewhat hubristic of the human race to consider the end of themselves, the end of the world. There are so very few things that could literally end this entire planet, most of them having to do with cosmic events beyond our knowledge or control, or both. We may disappear, but if we do so by our own hand, then clearly we deserve to.

I would have to shrug my shoulders and say "Well... fair cop. Whose for a beer and a smoke?". But we humans are not capable of killing the entire planet. Even if we unleashed the worst we could upon its surface, the planet would remain intact. Its biological diversity might reduce to zero, but it will still float in roughly its normal orbit, regardless of what we do.

Im almost certain every generation thinks they are the last. I also hear there is quite a market for it!. In time, humans will eventually fade and the earth can try a new creation. Even she makes mistakes.

I still retain optimism that we will overcome our lesser nature.
