Police in Tbilisi, Georgia, are investigating the death of the country's prime minister. He either died by accident in a friend's apartment, as the government said, or political opponents had him killed, as several friends said Thursday.

The victim: Zurab Zhvania, 41, a one-time ally of ex-President Eduard Shevardnadze.

The scene: Apartment of Zhvania's friend Raul Usupov, the deputy governor of the Kremo-Kartli region. Zhvania was found slumped in a chair, a backgammon board in front of him. Usupov was found dead on the kitchen floor.

Preliminary findings: A faulty space heater, the Interior Ministry said, caused the deaths. Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili said security guards had been unable to contact Zhvania for several hours Wednesday night. Around 4 a.m. Thursday, they went to the apartment where Zhvania had gone earlier. They broke through a window to find the pair.

For two people to be found dead sounds like something went on in that apartment. A heater that they say was the reason for ther deaths, seems somewhat ridiculous to me. It is more believeable that they possibly were murdered as the Prime Minister was for peace and his enemies were against it.
