It's happening right before our eyes. Big Data is destroying the human race as we know it and a new augmented human will emerge.

I think it's inevitable because I believe the purpose of the universe is to process vast amounts of information. The reason why there's this AI explosion is because of Big Data. When Data increases, technology that can process the data starts to emerge. The human race as we know doesn't have many years left. These things are advancing more rapidly than I initially thought. I knew data was growing but it will speed up even more with the internet of things that will soon coonect a billion things from cars to microwaves. This will grow data even faster than we have grown it through things like the internet.

Every 10-20 minutes, we're producing more data than we have produced in the last 100 years. Let me say that again, every 10-20 minutes, we're producing more data than we have produced in the last 100 years.

Every day, we create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data — so much that 90% of the data in the world today has been created in the last two years alone. This data comes from everywhere: sensors used to gather climate information, posts to social media sites, digital pictures and videos, purchase transaction records, and cell phone GPS signals to name a few. This data is big data.

Here's a video that talks about how fast A.I. is progressing.

This is also why you see more talk about a brain-computer interface by people like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg.

Elon Musk has been working on a human-computer brain interface called Neuralink, aiming to link human brains to artificial intelligence.

Among the main ideas is that linking AI to human brains is not about turning people into cyborgs, because they already are. It's about improving and upgrading people from "primitive, low-bandwidth cyborgs to modern high-bandwidth cyborgs."

Since we already spend a significant part of our daily lives in the digital world, upgrading to a higher-bandwidth connection to that world makes sense, and that's what Musk envisions.

"You're already digitally superhuman. The thing that would change is the interface-having a high-bandwidth interface to your digital enhancements," Musk explains, as cited by Wait But Why. "The thing is that today, the interface all necks down to this tiny straw, which is, particularly in terms of output, it's like poking things with your meat sticks, or using words - either speaking or tapping things with fingers. And in fact, output has gone backward. It used to be, in your most frequent form, output would be 10-finger typing. Now, it's like, two-thumb typing. That's crazy slow communication. We should be able to improve that by many orders of magnitude with a direct neural interface."

Again, the growth of big data means the human brain as it is can't process all of the data and therefore we will need to augment our brains to merge with A.I.

This is why he talks about low and high bandwidth. He talks about how we interact with our digital selves now which is low bandwidth. This is because we interact with our digital selves through our smartphones or tablets. A high bandwidth connection would be if we could access Wikipedia and post on Facebook at the same time with just our thoughts.

Here's a couple of videos that talk about the growth of data and our brains merging with computers.

I think all intelligent civilizations end in the way we will end. They merge with Artificial Intelligence because the growth of data.

If i was an evil overlord i would literally be drooling at this prospect

"Soon i will be able to hack directly into peoples brains and control everything they think do and feel - mwahaha"

"Yes the possibilities are endless - how many do you think we need to leave alive to serve and amuse us?"

They already do that.. its called television and media..

Good tech, the (potentially near) future looks amazing, with of course some re-education and refocusing as a civilization. Embrace tech, this is our next step in evolution, now its just a matter of learning to fit in within the new world.

More like Big Brother is watching.

But tell me, in this age of 'vast information storage and processing', how is it all these recent terror attacks in Europe have the intel agencies knowing who they were ahead of time, but didn't use that info to intercede and stop them?

This is about security and protection, right?

Star Trek episode, Plato's Step Children came to mind... total control for the elite's amusement:

Once humanity creates a forum of intelligence that learns at an exponential rate and suffers from none of the 3 dimensional limitations we mere mortals are bound by we have pretty much served our evolutionary purpose.

Hopefully any such intelligence would take pity on its creators and allow us to merge our own intelligence with its own thus permit us to perceive the universe and reality in ways we can only hope to imagine while locked away in our limited meat sack biological bodies.

The singularity would not be the end for Humanity but the beginning of a new stage of evolution.
