Bill Gates: Terrorists could wipe out 30 million people by weaponising a disease like smallpox

A bioterrorist attack which could wipe out 30 million people is becoming increasingly likely because it is easier than ever to create and spread deadly pathogens, Bill Gates has warned.

“Bioterrorism is a much larger risk than a pandemic,” he said. “All these advances in biology have made it far easier for a terrorist to recreate smallpox, which is a highly fatal pathogen, where there is essentially no immunity remaining at this point.

Chemistry kits which allow genetic editing can already be bought online for under £100. Scientists are concerned that a new technique, called Crispr, is now so cheap and widely available that amateurs will start experimenting at home, or in school labs. The technique works like genetic scissors to cut away DNA code and replace it with new genes. It has been hailed as one of the most significant scientific breakthroughs in recent years, but there are fears that in the wrong hands, the procedure could unleash dangerous strains of bacteria or other organisms. Kits to make E.coli resistant to antibiotics are already for sale on the internet.

After reading what Bill has to say my "anxiousometer" has exploded.

Sometimes the future looks a very dark place. Reminds me of Gilliam's "Twelve Monkeys" movie where a psychopathic scientist unleashes a plague that wipes out humans on the surface and the survivors have to live underground.

Those bunkers the rich have may be useful for another kind of catastrophe. I wonder, are our Western governments awake to this threat? Is it being taken seriously and are there measures prepared to defend against it?

Best believe that when it happens it'll be just like the mess in Syria. Someone like Assad will be blamed for the outcome of a program the united states has implemented like funding "rebels".

They did, but it has been eradicated from the earth now other than in the vaults in Russia and U.S where it is stored by each under agreement. They have to do that in case we ever need to have it available for labs to analyse it in search of a vaccine if ever a scenario arose such as the one Bill gives.

No terrorists have it right now, but it is looking increasingly like Crispr related DIY genetics will become common place and of course evolve as science never stands still, just rolls on evolving at an every increasing velocity.

One thing our Arabic friends are very good at is chemistry. I just hope our Security Services are keeping busy and that all seeing eye has got is reading specs on, lol.

Ever think about the refugees being snuck in in the middle of the night at our airports that might be carrying small pox and other diseases?

Don't fool yourself, Gates is creating cover for a few miles later down the road.....

Bioweapons yes, on a mass scale, nah, been done and too messy, you lose all your potential slaves...

Better to target people's DNA in high ranking positions and design viruses to attack those DNA types only, that's what I think about now when BIOterrorism is talked about.

The large scale stuff you can protect against was so 5 decades ago, now a days, personalized concepts are all the rage.

Yes, but with a £100 ($150ish) chemistry set it seems possible to make E Coli that can't be treated by antibiotics. Even a dullard like me could cause a lot of damage with that. I could go round London or NYC on my little scooter and cause havoc and maybe many deaths in an eight hour shift.

The potential is there and is as dangerous as the human imagination is to invent ways to weaponize this.

In early 2003, a decision was made to reinstitute smallpox vaccination for selected segments of the US population on the basis of concern that smallpox could be used as an agent of bioterrorism.

They discontinued the vaccine program due to complications, people were getting sick form it, but that doesn't change the gubment thought it sufficient a terror threat to start a vaccine program.

Small Pox in its original form was lethal enough to kill untold Native Americans from a few infected blankets, so the story goes. Our immunity is lower now than ever.
