According to me, an extraction should be the last option only if there is no chance of saving that tooth. I had a similar situation and I had undergone a root canal procedure from an emergency dental care in Toronto. The procedure was to remove the infected pulp from the tooth with the removal of minimum tooth structure thereby maintaining the tooth structurally intact.

As a preventative, I started taking Oregano Spirits and Olive Leaf.
To keep the bad bugs in check.

And, tomorrow I'll start taking Arnica tablets.....to minimize pain, swelling and inflammation.

Oregano is the winner! Natural antibiotic.
I have a chest and ear infection and have started taking it with garlic. (kyolic)

It's minimzed or saved me from all kinds of nasties!!

I used to add colloidal silver, but usually stick to the herbs now.
I also add other herbs to the oregano/olive leaf cocktail, depending on my symptoms.....like sore throat or cough.

I never did the silver thing...other than in my hair.

I gotta say, the results were not worth the expense....if in fact the silver helped at all.

UPDATE

The tooth is gone.
Had plenty of Novocaine, and gas for about 10 minutes.
The actually extraction took less than two minutes, and there was no pain, just some pressure. Got two stitches that will melt in about 10 days.

Was told to ice it for two days, to avoid swelling.
And to use heat on the third day to keep the muscles loose.
Still using Arnica tablets, not that much pain, really...and the pain meds the surgeon prescribed.
Aleve overnight.

Soft foods yesterday, and today. Yogurt, scrambled eggs, homemade cream of tomato soup, hummus.
Will add regular foods back tomorrow....."crunchy" foods being added last.

The first two weeks were the hardest....cuz I kept wanting to use that side to chew.

Today, about six weeks later, the site is pretty much totally healed on the outside.....waiting for the bone to grow back internally.
My mouth knows it is healed....and softer foods can be handled by my entire mouth.

Too early to decide if I will have a bridge done or let the hole be there.
If I do it, it will be the end of 2018....working on insurance for that time frame.
