While I wouldn't call this a little unknown gem since it won the Academy Award, I would say it well deserved it and I consider it a gem personally. If you haven't seen it, I think you will enjoy the twist of the plot. So, I suggest "Crash."

Now for a very unknown little gem I suggest "King of Hearts." This is a old French movie and also dubbed. I found it to be a extremely funny comedy. Basic plot of it, The insane asylum truly runs the town by accident for a short while and no one is the wiser.

I saw the devil - Korean movie about a serial killer who murders the wife of a cop... I won't spoil the rest but it is friggin awesome, dark as hell, ridiculously funny in places, violent and twisty.

Save the green planet - Another Korean movie, it's funny, sad and insightful. Loved it.

Rec - Spanish found footage horror flick that's actually well made and pretty scary.

Grave of the fireflies - Japanese movie, don't be fooled by it being a cartoon...it's one of the greatest antiwar movies ever made and I've seen it reduce grown men to tears.

The raid 2 - hands down the best action movie ever made. It's the only film I've ever seen where I sat in stunned silence for the whole 3 hours then immediately paid for another ticket and went in to watch it again.

Mesrine - French crime trilogy based on a true story. Man, if even 10% of this was true this guy was so unbelievably ballsy you can't help root for him at times. Very well made.

Tusk- Kevin Smith movie. Good acting and entertaining even if plot is ridiculous.

Swiss Army Man- also good movie, completely ridiculous plot.

I like stupid movies that are well made with great acting

Is the Night Watch the Russian movie? I saw that and the Day Watch. There was supposed to be a trilogy I thought, but never saw part 3 come out. I did see Pontypool and think I saw Devil's Backbone. Haven't seen the other, will check it out. Thanks.

Yes. I didn't know it was supposed to be a trilogy. Saw Day Watch also but it didn't seem to have the same feel as Nightwatch.

I think your daughter would love movie night with this old broad. Eraserhead will always be one of my all time favorites.

She might get a kick out of the Puppet Master series. You will know she is hooked when she knows all the puppets by name. If she likes that genre, she will love the Army of Darkness.

Thanks, I'll let her know. Maybe I can talk her into some binge watching when she comes back from school.

Sunshine was quite good. Not on Netflix, unfortunately, but a real gem for sci-fi fans.

Have you seen

Take shelter

It's the same director and actor that are in midnight special. Good film.

I was going to chime in with this same suggestion. I liked Take Shelter far better than Midnight Special.

Michael Shannon is amazing in it.

If you like Denzel:

Déjà vu:
Great movie. Takes a bit to figure out what is going on, but once you get it, it's a fantastic film. On Netflix.

Out of Time:
Another little known gem with Denzel Washington. Great action film with Denzel as a Police Chief who has a few things to hide. On Netflix.

Denzel Washington always shines in the movies he appears in, he plays Denzel Washington so well in all of them.
Always 5/5.

A movie I saw recently from a few years back. Reign over me. Starring Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle.

If you don't like Adam Sandler movies this is the movie for you. It will make you hate other Sandler movies even more because he's so good in this movie.

It's 100% the best performance of his career.
