I used to date a girl whose birthday was on April 17 she's probably involved somehow.
17 April 1946: Syria is declared fully independent from 26-years of French occupation
Martyrs' Day (Arabic: عيد الشهداء) is a Syrian and Lebanese national holiday commemorating the Syrian and Lebanese nationalists executed in Damascus and Beirut on May 6, 1916 by Jamal Pasha
Syria's embattled government has inaugurated a park in Damascus, which was named after North Korea's founding father Kim Il-sung. The 9,000-square-metre park lies in the southwestern Damascus district of Kafr Souseh, atop the ruins of recently bulldozed homes. The street adjacent to the park is also named for Kim and stretches for one kilometre.

These street names would have been there for years, probably decades.
